Stonington Institute Review

Located in North Stonington, Connecticut, Stonington Institute is a behavioral health facility originally founded in 1957 as Starlight Farms. It has since expanded to provide a range of treatment programs for clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders, with resources for adolescents and adults alike. The facility offers residential treatment to male and female veterans.

Accommodations and Food

The Stonington facility has a total of 45 beds available, with men and women housed in separate dorms. Rooms are typically shared between two to four clients at a time in twin beds. Each comes with basic amenities including dressers, small desks and shared closet space. The facility also has therapy rooms, exercise studios, shared common areas with television and a fully-equipped kitchen. Throughout their stay, all residents are served three meals a day cafeteria-style.

Treatment and Staff

Before programs begin, each client goes through an initial intake and assessment to help staff members develop their treatment plans. Those in need of detox can do so on-site before continuing on to treatment. The residential program at Stonington is generally 28 days.

Though programming may differ slightly depending on the client, each person has regimented schedules of individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT. Treatment also incorporates 12-step recovery, dual diagnosis support and medication management, if necessary. Group sessions cover a wide variety of topics including relapse prevention, spirituality, psychoeducation, trigger management and trauma processing.

The staff at Stonington Institute consists of psychologists, psychiatrists, MDs, RNs, case managers, LMSWs, LPCs, LCSWs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Holistic care practices are featured as well, including art and music therapy, yoga and martial arts.

In addition to residential treatment, the facility also offers more flexible Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) that are open to civilians. Those attending either of these outpatient programs can also work with staff members to find local sober housing for the duration of treatment. Clients who finish any primary care program can also step down the intensity of their programs as a form of aftercare as well.

In Summary

Overall, Stonington Institute is a broad treatment facility with a range of programs available for male and female veterans. Programs include evidence-based care, 12-step teachings, dual diagnosis support and holistic methods, all oriented with the structure and discipline with which military veterans are accustomed. For veterans struggling with addiction and related issues, Stonington Institute’s residential programs are a strong resource worth considering.
