Stonewall InstituteThe Basics

The Stonewall Institute is an outpatient substance abuse treatment center located in Phoenix, Arizona. Since 2013, Stonewall has offered various therapeutic options for people in the LGBTQ community. Every staff member at Stonewall is trained in the Stonewall Model, and in LGBTQ competency. This means that they are familiar with the unique stressors and sensitivities encountered by LGBTQ individuals and their families.

Treatment and Staff

Clinical evaluations performed by licensed clinicians are administered to assess the level of need for each client. Court-ordered or DUI-related substance abuse evaluations are offered, and co-occurring disorders are determined. Detox and dual diagnosis support is offered through referrals to local medical facilities.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is held three evenings a week, in three-hour sessions, for 10 weeks. Group therapy is the primary method of treatment, with clients focusing on underlying causes and conditions that contribute to substance abuse and related behaviors. Life skills training is also a key component of treatment, and helps clients build toward long-term sobriety. Individual therapy weekly and integration with two required off-site 12-step meetings per week contributes to Stonewall’s approach.

Level one and two DUI classes are offered and meet the requirements from the Arizona Department of Transportation. Classes are also available online and span 16 to 100 hours of treatment. Online assessments are conveniently accessible at all hours.

Behavioral Health Technicians assist and supervise clients, while therapists and CSACs facilitate groups. Referrals to medical professionals and legal representatives are available through a range of supplementary LGBTQ-specific resources in the community.

Extras

The aftercare program is available to clients that wish to maintain long-term recovery following residential treatment at a different facility, or after completing the 10-week IOP. Clients may attend one session a week for as long as they feel necessary. Stonewall staff coordinate with the client to identify recovery goals and needs, but there is a lot of flexibility offered with length of time and intensity of treatment. Therapeutic modalities include relapse prevention, identifying triggers, 12-step, SMART Recovery, or Celebrate Recovery meetings, individual therapy and resources for sober living, family counseling, continuing care for co-occurring disorders and vocational counseling.

Diversity training and consulting services are offered to senior management, human resources professionals and employees to promote LGBTQ equality in the workplace. The training programs are designed to be accessible to a wide variety of audiences, including corporations, faith-based groups, educational institutions and small businesses.

In Summary

Stonewall Institute offers a highly-specialized type of treatment for clients struggling with substance abuse in the LGBTQ community. There are very few centers that focus on meeting the needs of this group, and Stonewall ensures all its staff is well trained and aware of specific issues that pertain to these clients. Initial assessment costs $199, and the 10-week treatment program includes 90 hours of treatment. The cost is negotiable, as Stonewall does not turn away clients in need due to inability to pay.
