Stonecrest Center Adolescent Inpatient Review

Stonecrest Center is a mental health, developmental and co-occurring disorder treatment facility that serves adolescent, adults and seniors within an intensive, inpatient capacity on the eastside of Detroit, Michigan. The adolescent care is entirely individualized and uses a combination of evidence-based approaches with holistic methods for treatment. Programming consists of age appropriate modalities designed not only for the clients but also for their family members and loves ones.

Accommodations and Food

Stonecrest is a large clinical building that has 133 beds in total. The clients are divided up into wings, with the adolescents being completely separated from the adults and seniors. The bedrooms are all double occupancy, providing twin beds and small dressers. The common areas include an outdoor recreational space, dining room, music room with instruments like a piano and guitar, and rooms for medical and clinical sessions.

There are three meals served a day, prepared on-site by staff members. In some cases clients can dine together in the cafeteria, though some are only permitted to eat in their rooms. There is usually a set menu, though clients can inform the staff if there is any allergy or restriction. The meals are, for the most part, healthy and nutritious.

Treatment and Staff

The facility is open 24 hours a day for client admissions, which is particularly advantageous for those who are experiencing a psychiatric crisis. Upon arrival the client has several assessments to determine the level of care they need, and if there is medication needed immediately to help with stabilization. Incoming adolescent clients are generally analyzed for signs of self harm, suicidal ideation or any other extreme behaviors. The staff also coordinates care with the clients existing doctors or mental health providers and with their parents or caregivers.

Usually around 48 hours the clients meet with a psychiatrist for evaluation and medication management. There are individual and group therapy options on a daily basis. Groups offers communication skills, tips on problem solving and building self esteem. The programs are broken down into three phases, but since the treatment is entirely customized to the client’s needs, the amount of time that each individual stays at the facility varies greatly from person to person.

Program approaches include CBT, DBT, EMDR, and trauma-informed care. Expressive therapy such as art and music are essential elements of the adolescent program in addition to Pet Assisted Therapy. Each cients is assigned a therapist once they are in the program along with a social worker.

The clinical staff is comprised of psychiatrists, LPCs, LCSWs, nurses, and psychiatric techs.

Extras

There are counseling services offered to family members of the adolescent clients. Additionally, clients have therapeutic recreational time as part of their treatment which includes basketball and other team supported sports.

In Summary

Stonecrest Center has a bit of a controversial view in term of their treatment practices from the past, though the staff has been committed to providing their adolescent clients with focused treatment for when they are going through a mental health crisis, and supporting their families through the process. It’s a viable resource for Detroit citizens, especially families looking for support for a child who is struggling.
