Southern California’s Stirling Behavioral Health Institute of Van Nuys was originally established in 1985 as a treatment facility for adolescents dealing with emotional trauma. Today The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health provides funding for Stirling to offer comprehensive outpatient mental health and chemical dependency treatment and support for young clients up to the age of 25 and parents of children up to the age of 17.
Treatment and Staff
The treatment protocols for young people addressing a variety of mental health and co-occurring disorders can vary from client to client. Length, duration and type of care incompletely individualized and designed with the intention of guiding each individual to their highest potential. One treatment model in particular, known as Seeking Safely, is an evidence based approach that is specifically for young clients or adults who have experienced some sort of trauma which lead to addiction. This method can be provided in both a group and individual setting and emphasizes learning new coping skills.
Another integral element to treatment at Stirling is trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, or TFCBT, which uses process therapy groups and individualized programming for both kids and their families. This is also an effective treatment for adults and adolescents who are struggling with grief and loss.
Dual diagnosis support is provided through this facility and medication management is available. In addition to trauma, some of the most common issues that are covered during treatment are anger management that is being manifested through destructive behaviors, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, PTSD, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.
There are three main Master’s-level clinicians on staff at Stirling who together have over 50 years of experience working with adolescents and their families. Their credentials include PhD, PsyD, LMFT and LCSW.
Stirling provides additional community resources and referrals for medical services for families that qualify.
The philosophy at Stirling is that providing a solid mental health foundation can aid in the advancement of society as a whole. By focusing treatment solely on youth and their families, it enables personal growth and overall wellness that starts from an early age and ultimately results in a healthy adult who is able to utilize those coping skills for the rest of their lives. This is an excellent option for those seeking a low cost program with the goal of preventing a life lost to addiction.
