The Basics
Founded in 2006 in Akron, Ohio, Sterling Sober Resources provides sober living and transitional housing for financially challenged and criminal justice clients. Their mission is to help people who have hit rock bottom and who want to change their lives.
Accommodations and Amenities
Sterling Sober Resources has four gender-specific locations and accommodates approximately 15 men and five women. The locations are within walking distance of shopping, churches, public transportation and around 15 weekly recovery meetings, including those at St. Thomas Hospital. Typically, between two and five clients share a furnished apartment that includes a living room, kitchen, dining room, bathroom and bedroom. The apartments are decorated with eclectic furnishings, including a country-style dining room table and chairs, bookshelves crammed with books, large couches and vintage style armchairs. Amenities include bedding, an alarm clock, phone, Cable TV, laundry facilities and utilities. Clients are responsible for their own personal hygiene items and toiletries.
A typical bedroom includes two twin beds with headboards, decorative comforters, pillows, a night lamp, nightstands and old-fashioned wooden dressers. Residents are responsible for their own food and prepare their own meals. Most of the clients qualify for food stamps, which helps cover the cost of groceries. Additionally, there are food pantries in the local area, which provide canned goods and other nourishment.
Rules and Regulations
Prospective clients are interviewed to ensure that Sterling Sober Resources is the proper fit. Roommates are taught to establish a sense of community among each other, as well as to provide peer support. Sterling Sober Resources conducts random drug and alcohol screenings. Those who test positive are immediately evicted from the house.
Requirements include seeking gainful employment, performing household chores, participating in vocational training and attending daily 12-step meetings, which are held both on and off the premises. Other weekly obligations include doing between three and four hours of community service. Vocational training is provided at Sterling Sober Resources’ Job Resource Center. The Center includes computers, Internet access, copy machines and on-staff support. Other services included are recovery coaching, life skills groups and peer-to-peer recovery support.
Extras
An on-staff pastor provides clients with spiritual mentoring. Sterling Sober Resources also provides translation services to Spanish-speaking clients.
The program relies heavily on donations from the local community and accepts items including clothing, coffee, office supplies, paper products and personal hygiene items.
In Summary
At Sterling Sober Resources, the staff is also in recovery and they will go out of their way to help clients. They seek out residents who will do whatever it takes to stay clean and sober and get back on track. For the financially challenged who seek refuge and a chance to rebuild their lives, Sterling Sober Resources is the way to go.
