stepsSTEPS Review

Located in Apopka, Florida, Specialized Treatment Education and Prevention Services, referred to as STEPS, is a private, non-profit organization that provides residential treatment for indigent women suffering from alcoholism, substance addiction and co-occurring disorders. It also provides little to no cost substance abuse and addiction treatment on an outpatient basis at eight locations throughout central Florida. Offerings extend to pregnant and postpartum females and women with infants.

Accommodations and Food

STEPS has a 48-bed capacity and residents are accommodated inside two dorm-style buildings. Women share furnished triple-occupancy rooms that include bunk or twin beds, dressers and lamps. Women with infants, or pregnant women set to give birth during treatment, are allowed to have their children live with them.

During the first two weeks, residents undergo a blackout period where they are not allowed to have any contact with the outside world. Cellphones are taken away and phone calls are limited to emergencies. This allows new residents to acclimate and focus on setting their recovery goals.

Residents are served three healthy meals, and two nutritious snacks, daily.

Treatment and Staff

Prospective clients undergo an in-person assessment so that an individualized treatment plan can be developed. Programs are between four and six months long. While detox is not provided on site, clients can be referred to local facilities if necessary. Women in need of medical and perinatal care are also referred to the appropriate doctor or OBGYN.

Treatment at STEPS works within the structure of group and individual therapy that employs evidence-based modalities, such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Group programming comences throughout the day while individual sessions are scheduled two to three times a week. Groups cover relapse prevention, self-esteem, codependency, parenting, HIV/AIDS education, life and coping skills, the recovery process, trauma and gender-specific issues. Clients are introduced to 12-step principles and are transported to local AA/NA meetings. Women requiring dual diagnosis support are referred to a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication if necessary.

The staff consists of LACs and other Master’s-level therapists. There is an approximate staff-to-client ratio of three-to-one.

Extras

Aftercare consists of outpatient treatment, continued attendance at 12-step meetings and housing referrals.

Pregnant and postpartum women are provided with prenatal and pediatric care for their infants.

In Summary

STEPS offers compassionate and comprehensive care for financially challenged women, including pregnant and postpartum, who suffer from chemical dependency.
