The Basics
Steps to Recovery Homes operates two sober living facilities in Cottonwood, Arizona, a small scenic town in Yavapai County. Steps to Recovery was founded by Damien Browning and Anne Vickers, who’ve been in recovery for over three decades. Steps to Recovery opened in 2013 and encourages residents to take a holistic approach to recovery and supports them with life skills classes throughout the week.
Accommodations and Amenities
Men and women reside in separate homes. The men’s home, Hope House, has a maximum of eight residents. The women’s home, Gratitude House, has a maximum of five residents. Residents usually have roommates, though a single may be available for long-term residents.
Both homes have a modern, modest décor and feature ample outdoor space including gardens and barbecues. The men’s home has free weights and both homes have TVs and free laundry facilities. Steps to Recovery helps new clients with toiletries and other personal supplies upon arrival.
The residences are in walking distance to several supermarkets and all clients are responsible for their own shopping and food preparation. Many clients in the women’s residence, however, often choose to cook communally.
Rules and Regulations
Trained recovery supervisors reside in each home for support and supervision. Clients have an 11 pm curfew during the week and 12 am on weekends. Clients are required to perform weekly volunteering commitments and attend 12-step meetings. In their first 90 days in the home, they must attend daily meetings and four each week thereafter. Steps to Recovery provides rides to one meeting each day.
Extras
Life coaches in the Cottonwood area come to the home to offer life skills classes each weekday on topics including financial literacy and self-acceptance.
Steps to Recovery has relationships with mental health and outpatient programs nearby and provides referrals for clients in need of treatment groups and dual diagnosis support.
Families may visit with house approval, and Steps to Recovery clients are eligible for a discounted membership to a nearby gym. The facility also operates a re-sale shop, Miracles Happen, that helps subsidize clients’ rents.
