The Basics
Based in Knoxville, Tennessee, Steps House is an expansive organization that operates 38 sober living homes throughout the state. Founded in 1991, it originally only offered programs for men but now has services for women and homeless veterans as well.
Accommodations and Amenities
Between its many locations, Steps House has a total 140 beds available. While the layout of each house differs, each accommodates three to five residents in gender-specific bedrooms. Homes are equipped with on-site laundry, common living rooms with TV and full kitchens. Because the program is designed to teach independent living skills, all residents are expected to prepare their own meals.
Rules and Regulations
To live at one of the Steps Houses, you must be at 18 years or older, gainfully employed full-time and sober. Residents are required to submit to regular and random drug testing and remain active in a local 12-step program. Homes adhere to a three-phase system where clients learn financial independence, personal discipline and responsibility. Case management is also available for legal issues. Though the residents have a hand in running the homes, there is a LADC that supervises operations. While not a permanent living solution, all facilities have flexible lengths of stay.
Extras
Steps offers a specialized track for homeless veterans that can accommodate up to 40 residents at any given time. This program is provided with the cooperation of the Veteran’s Administration and is sensitive to combat-related trauma and issues. Steps House also runs a partner organization called Drunk Church, a religious organization for those in recovery that stresses the 12-step principles.
