Steps 4 Life Community ServicesThe Basics

Steps 4 Life Community Services in Redlands, California was founded in 2001 by Cynthia McGuigan, a recovering addict whose original mission was to find a safe and sober environment for herself and her five-year old child after she had completed residential treatment. Steps 4 Life provides five sober living homes, including the Webster house for women, the Jasper Street house for mothers and children, the Robin house house for fathers and their children and Orange and Sixth Street houses for men.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Webster house accommodates ten women. At Sixth Street and at Orange house there are between four and six men. The Jasper and Robin houses accommodate nine clients each, not including children. All houses have similar accommodations, except lodgings vary for parents with their kids. Typically, clients are paired in rooms that include twin beds, dressers and lamps.

The Webster House includes a mother-on-law cottage in the backyard where three long-term residents live and one acts as a house manager. At Steps 4 Life, amenities include Cable TV, Wi-Fi, house phone privileges and laundry facilities. The houses are in walking distance to Redlands transit center. Residents are responsible for their own groceries, but typically most of them qualify for food stamps. Meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens.

Rules and Regulations

Clients are accepted at Steps 4 Life at any stage in their recovery. Length of stay is typically between six months and a year, but the Webster house manager has been there since 2011. Weekly requirements for unemployed clients include attending three or four 12-step meetings, actively looking for work, performing community service or pursuing an education and if appropriate, attending outpatient treatment at a drug rehab. Clients who seek an alternative to AA are encouraged to attend local SMART Recovery meetings.

Staff assists clients with community, job and outpatient substance abuse treatment referrals. Those seeking dual diagnosis support are referred to a therapist who collaborates closely with Steps 4 Life. While employment is encouraged, Steps 4 Life accepts clients with a feasible income, including those receiving disability, unemployment and child support.

At Steps 4 Life, the curfew is 10:30 pm Mondays through Thursday and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Additionally, clients must be out of the house between 8 am and 3 pm Mondays through Fridays. Clients are subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The house, like many other sober living facilities, has a zero tolerance policy for clients who test positive.

Besides Cynthia McGuigan, who is a certified chemical dependency counselor, among other credentials, staff includes five house managers and a housing coordinator.

Extras

Clients attend local bonfires, outside functions and quarterly barbeques at local parks.

In Summary

There is a strong family atmosphere at Steps 4 Life, and a sense of caring promoted by McGuigan and her staff. While they do take clients regardless of what stage they are in their recovery, chances are Steps 4 Life would be highly beneficial for those who have completed primary care at a drug rehab, especially those who need s safe place for themselves and their kids.
