Steppinstone Inc Welcome HomeThe Basics

Welcome Home is a supportive housing program facilitated through southeastern Massachusetts’ Steppingstone, Inc. It offers sober living at a reduced cost for chronically homeless adults who are HIV positive and struggling with a co-occurring disorder. Located in several facilities in New Bedford, residents have access to outpatient treatment, medication management, medical care and relapse prevention groups, along with 12-step meetings and evidence-based therapy.

Accommodations and Amenities

Welcome Home has 11 apartments scattered throughout New Bedford; nine of which are one-bedroom units and the other two are two-bedroom family units. The apartments have full kitchens, a dining room space and are walking distance to shops, restaurants and grocery stores.

Residents are required to have employment and be able to pay a portion of the rent. Steppingstone, Inc. provides a case manager who works on behalf of the clients with the building’s landlord. Clients are also eligible for state programs through Steppingstone and usually acquire food stamps in order to provide and prepare meals for themselves.

Rules and Regulations

Clients must be both psychologically and medically stable prior to admission but the primary requirement for treatment is a desire to be sober. While living at Welcome Home, it is suggested that clients simultaneously attend one of the outpatient substance abuse programs offered through Steppingstone. This typically requires a commitment of up to three days of group counseling and weekly individual therapy in addition to submitting regular drug screens.

Clients attend AA or NA meetings, relapse prevention classes and psychoeducational lectures. There are also anger management and parenting classes offered. Therapeutic approaches include CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), and clients are provided with referrals to medical and long-term psychiatric care for medication management. Additionally, clients are able to obtain educational services and employment assistance. There are also specialty therapeutic and support services for participants of this program who have experiences trauma or domestic violence.

There is a multidisciplinary staff of counselors and clinicians employed by the Steppingstone network including LCSWs, LPCs, substance abuse counselors, psychiatrists, MDs and RNs.

In Summary

The Welcome Home program not only offers a housing solution for the chronically homeless but also a chance for men and women to regain confidence and empowerment in sobriety. Steppingstone, Inc. facilitates 12-step recovery, evidence-based therapeutic support and case management in a supportive, caring environment.  It’s an invaluable resource for individuals in the area ready to restart life in recovery.
