Steppingstone Incorporated is a multi-faceted addiction and recovery network serving the communities of southeastern Massachusetts. Its residential facility in New Bedford, Massachusetts offers treatment for pregnant and postpartum women living with their infant children who are struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Conducted in a supportive, home-like atmosphere, Steppingstone is a long-term program based on 12-step principles. Treatment includes psychoeducation, relapse prevention, group and individual therapy.
Accommodations and Food
The New Bedford facility is a three-story building with 14 bedrooms and a total of 21 beds. Residents usually share their room with their children and the three large bathrooms are shared amongst all clients. The living quarters are on the top two stories while the ground floor serves as the common area with a kitchen, dining room, living room, and meeting spaces.
All food is provided and residents take turns preparing meals for each other as part of a rotating chore schedule.
Treatment and Staff
The program at New Bedford is highly structured, especially in the beginning. There are mandatory group sessions daily, along with house meetings and classes. For dual diagnosis clients, medication management services are available. Additionally, women struggling with opiate withdrawal have access to Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) via methadone.
Treatment is typically three months to a year, and during that time residents participate in skill building and parenting classes, learn about coping skills and anger management and attend HIV education classes. Aftercare plans are developed throughout the course of treatment as well. Weekly individual sessions focus on guidance and goal setting. Clients can also take advantage of vocational training and assistance, and during the last part of their stay, many of women get jobs or enroll in classes.
Treatment is based on the 12-step philosophy and clients attend daily AA/NA meetings and obtain a sponsor. They also journal and have Big Book study sessions. This is in addition to being of service by volunteering in the community and/or aiding incoming clientele with getting acclimated to the facility.
The staff of New Bedford House include LADCs and LCSWs.
Extras
There are family counseling sessions available and case management services that include medical and dental procedures. There are also specialty case management options for pregnant women and infants.
The women participate in a variety of recreational and therapeutic activities in addition to a structured schedule of group. They take monthly field trips to Cornell Farms, which offers outdoor exercise like hiking or swimming, and also enjoy bowling and movie nights.
