The Dakota Counseling Institute has provided mental health and addiction recovery services for the residents of South Dakota for over 35 years. Located in Mitchell, about an hour from Sioux Falls, Stepping Stones is its private, nonprofit inpatient treatment facility. Stepping Stones offers detox and residential substance abuse treatment to adults and outpatient services to both adults and adolescents.
Accommodations and Food
Accommodating up to 63 men and women at a time, Stepping Stones houses clients four to a room. Private rooms may become available if the facility is not full. An exercise room with weights and basic workout equipment is available for use, and there is a TV in the communal recreation area.
Three meals a day are served in the dining hall. Breakfast consists of options like eggs, cereal and pastries. Hot lunches and dinners are prepared and served with the help of the residents. There are usually two options and a salad bar available at each meal.
Treatment and Staff
At Stepping Stones, new clients are assessed and placed in a program that is the best fit for their needs. Detox is available on-site and the unit serves up to three clients at a time. The average detox stay is five to seven days. Participants are then moved to the high intensity 30-day residential program or the lower intensity outpatient program.
The residential program consists of a rigorous daily schedule that includes group therapy, 12-step meetings and Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), as well as counseling and homework assigned by counselors. Anger management and relapse prevention courses are also included in the program. Clients with co-occurring disorders are supported by consulting psychiatrists who are able to offer medication management. Upon completion of the program, clients may step down to outpatient treatment.
The six-week outpatient program is for clients who do not require detox or inpatient treatment. It includes group therapy three times a week for two-hour sessions. Groups typically have between five and 10 clients and specialty groups are available for women and adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17. Individual therapy and relapse prevention courses are also available and participation in daily 12-step meetings is required.
CADCs, chemical dependency counselors, psychiatric nurse practitioners, CSWs and registered nurses provide round-the-clock support for clients. Consulting psychiatrists, psychologists and psychology graduate students visit the facility to offer dual diagnosis support, as needed.
Stepping Stones also offers first offender and DUI courses that meet for two hours every Wednesday evening. The DUI program is 12 weeks long.
State funding for treatment is available for those who qualify because of financial hardship.
Dakota Counseling Institute’s Stepping Stones offers a comprehensive continuum of 12 step-based addiction treatment. Those with the most severe chemical dependency can be assured that they will be supervised by medical professionals during detox. This facility offers a variety of options and highly skilled staff for an affordable price.
