Stepping Stone House for Women Review
Stepping Stone House for Women has been in operation for nearly 30 years in Portsmouth, Ohio. As part of the Counseling Center organization, Stepping Stone offers a minimum 90-day residential treatment program for adult women, including mothers with children ages 12 and under, pregnant women and single women. Stepping Stone utilizes evidence-based treatments.
Accommodations and Food
The Stepping Stone house has its own kitchen, multiple bathrooms and living rooms equipped with televisions. Clients room together with their children and possibly one other client, depending on the room. Each client and child have their own bed. Clients are instructed to bring roughly eight days’ worth of clothing, appropriate for the season of intake. Stepping Stone has laundry facilities, but clients must provide their own laundry basket, personal hygiene items, clock radio or alarm clock and cigarettes, if they smoke. Bed linens, three to four bath towels and wash cloths, a robe, slippers and pajamas can all be provided by Stepping Stone. Clients may also bring in family photos, phone cards, stamps, envelopes and athletic shoes. Stepping Stone qualifies most of its clients for Medicaid and food care, which it uses to purchase food for everyone, while also having the provisions to pay for more, if necessary. Breakfast and dinner are had at the house, while clients have lunch at the facility where therapy takes place.
Treatment and Staff
To enter Stepping Stone there is typically a four to six week waiting period. Clients are expected to have completed detox first. During the 90 day program, group behavioral therapy is available throughout the day at a nearby off-site location, as are individual sessions. After a comprehensive assessment and orientation, clients are integrated into the Stepping Stone community, take part in 12-step support groups, as well as topical and DBT-based groups.
Outpatient family services, family group and children’s therapy are also available. Each client is assigned a case manager who also helps schedule any medical appointments she or her children may need. Stepping Stone employs a number of licensed counselors, behavioral health specialists and case managers.
Extras
Day care for the infants is available on-site, while Stepping Stone transports older children to a neighboring preschool and school by bus, daily.
Some further services available at Stepping Stone include: physical evaluations, pre-natal care, financial and education assessments, money management and budgeting, employment training and teaching independent living skills.
