The Basics
Founded in 2006 by William Steiner in Croydon, Pennsylvania, Step by Step Houses provide safe and structured gender-specific sober living for men and women. Since their inception, they have expanded a large network spanning Philadelphia, Levittown, Pottsdown, Morrisville and Bensalem. Step by Step Houses has a total of 16 houses, including several homes that cater to professional men and women.
Accommodations and Amenities
Accommodations vary, depending on the size of the house, but there are anywhere from ten to 20 clients per residence. The houses vary in appearance. The Belmont house, which is a colonial style mansion, accommodates 20 professional women. The Wyoming house is a Cape Cod-style house that holds ten men. Clients are paired in double-occupancy furnished rooms. Private rooms are available for an additional charge. Amenities include air conditioning, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi and cable TV.
Belmont House clients have access to a daily continental breakfast. The fully equipped kitchens are stocked with food. Residents take turn preparing dinners for the entire household from Monday through Thursday. At other times, residents are responsible for their own meal preparation. Each house has an onsite live-in residential manager, who is in a 12-step recovery program.
Rules and Regulations
At Step by Step, clients must have completed detox and been clean and sober for a minimum of 24 hours. Requirements include attendance at an outpatient program (if appropriate), acquisition of a job or attendance at school. Step by Step Houses works closely with many local outpatient drug rehabs and provides referrals.
Other requirements include attendance at a minimum of four weekly 12-step meetings, participation at the weekly house meeting and performance of household chores. At Step by Step Houses, random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. A zero tolerance policy is enforced and residents who have relapsed are immediately evicted from the premises. The curfew is midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Extras
Other services, available at an additional cost, include recovery coaching. The houses are all located a short distance from a plethora of 12-step meetings.
