The Step Up InnThe Basics

Located about 80 miles from New York City, in West Haven, Connecticut, is The Step Up Inn, a high end sober living home for women. The belief at Step Up Inn is that transitional living beyond primary care ensures that newly clean and sober women stay focused on their recovery. The Step Up Inn is several blocks away from the West Haven shore, which is home to The Sandy Point Beach and Bird Sanctuary, a scenic spot where rare migratory birds are often sighted.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Step Up Inn is located in a 1800’s Colonial house with red trim and Victorian-style windows. The residence, which was recently renovated, accommodates 12 clients. The house features an immense wood-tiled, rose-colored living room adjacent to a matching dining room. The living room includes old-fashioned end tables, a rock fireplace, and comfortable Vintage couches. Antique lamps lend a nostalgic ambience. The huge dining area has a large Americana-style table, chairs and a flat screen television hanging from the wall. The mint-green colored kitchen has granite countertops, three microwave ovens, a huge stainless steel refrigerator and a round country-style table with chairs.

An old-fashioned staircase leads to the second floor, where bedrooms are located. Clients share double or triple-occupancy rooms, with teal or lavender-colored walls. Furnishings include ceiling fans, large windows, wooden twin or bunk beds, matching dressers and lamps. A quadruple-occupancy room is available for financially challenged clients who have been accepted on a scholarship basis.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Amenities include Wi-Fi, Cable TV, a fire sprinkler system with smoke detectors, a spacious laundry room, a workout and yoga studio. A house manager lives on the premises, and makes sure that clients receive support and guidance.

Rules and Regulations

The Step Up Inn requires that potential clients have a minimum of 28 days of sobriety, and have completed primary care at a drug rehab. A 60-day minimum length of stay is required, but the women can live there as long as they want. At The Step Up Inn, clients are subject to random drug screening. Additionally, there is a daily 4 pm check-in when clients undergo breathalyzer testing. The facility practices a zero tolerance policy and evicts those who test positive.

Requirements include attending regular 12-step meetings, being present at house meetings and performing household chores. Cleanliness is taken seriously at The Step Up Inn. Residents are also not allowed to have any contact with men or engage in any intimate relationships. Additionally, all clients must sign in and sign out when entering or leaving the house. The curfew is 9 pm on the weekdays, while Saturdays and Sundays are reserved for spending time with family. During those days, curfew times vary.

At Step Up Inn, clients are offered in-house group and individual therapy with a licensed counselor. A weekly Life Skills group teaches basic day-to-day tools, so that clients can perform necessary functions, that are crucial to their well being. Onsite nurse services are provided, at an additional cost but insurance is accepted. Referrals are provided for clients seeking outpatient treatment and job opportunities.

Extras

The Step Up Inn accepts a few financially challenged clients on a scholarship basis.

Yoga classes and massage therapy are provided at no additional cost.

In Summary

While The Step Up Inn operates on a 12-step protocol, there are a lot of extras here, from life coaching to yoga and all these services are offered from a holistic viewpoint to recovery. For women seeking a family-style atmosphere and a place that provides a lot of nurturing, The Step Up Inn is an awesome choice.
