Step Away Treatment Centre is a private inpatient rehab in Port Elizabeth, on the beautiful Eastern Cape of South Africa. Step Away welcomes clients over the age of 18 struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, and is one of very few rehabs in Port Elizabeth to treat female clients. The facility’s holistic 21-, 60- or 90-day treatment programs aim to address the client’s mental, physical and spiritual needs.
Accommodations and Food
Step Away Treatment Centre is set in the beautiful and upscale neighborhood of Chelsea. The huge, modern white stucco home is perched overlooking the ocean. There is space for an intimate group of eight residents in double or triple occupancy rooms with en-suite bathrooms. The sprawling grounds feature a swimming pool, a beautifully manicured garden and several fountains. Clients are served three nutritious meals a day and have access to healthy snacks, coffee, bottled water and soft drinks.
Treatment and Staff
Clients undergo a comprehensive assessment before beginning treatment and decide which length of program is the best fit for them but they can always extend their stay if necessary. All new residents must have already completed detox and be physically and mentally stable in order to begin treatment. Residents attend daily group therapy that employs CBT and two to three individual sessions a week, in addition to family sessions if necessary. Psychoeducational and relapse prevention classes are incorporated into the treatment. For clients with co-occurring disorders, specialized talk therapy with a psychiatrist and medication management are provided.
Step Away Treatment Centre employs accredited counselors, a doctor, a nurse, a consulting psychiatrist, psychologist, social workers and administrative staff members.

Step Away Treatment Centre emphasizes fitness; with plenty of downtime allowed for swimming at the pool, gym workouts and hiking in the beautiful hills.
At Step Away, the aftercare process encourages clients to participate in monthly alumni support groups in order to remain connected and receive ongoing support. Although, the 12-step philosophy is not particularly emphasized during treatment, referrals for local meetings can be provided.
