Step 13The Basics

Step 13 in Denver, Colorado, was founded in 1983 by recovering addict and ex Golden Gloves boxer, Bob Coté. Step 13 is a long-term sober living facility for men over 21 years old. Step 13 partners with the local Goodwill Industries to also provide the Career Connections Center to help men become clean, sober and self-reliant enough to function in society.

Accommodations and Amenities

A new client at Step 13 starts his residency in a military barracks like dorm, along with another 20 to 25 men. The men each get dressers and lockers and as they progress in the program and maintain their sobriety ,they may move into private rooms. There is one bathroom downstairs and one on the main floor with 12 shower stalls, 12 sinks and four bathroom stalls.

Clients purchase their own food and cook in a communal kitchen. There is no initial cost to be admitted to Step 13. The goal is for clients to become self-sufficient, so they are required to start by working for the facility for the first five business days and then proceed to finding their own employment outside Step 13. Once they are employed, the cost is $10 per day, or $60 per week.

Rules and Regulations

In the Step 13 residential recovery program clients get regular breathalyzer tests and urinalysis. Mandatory on-site AA/NA meetings take place Mondays through Thursdays at 8:00 pm, as well as on Saturdays (CA meetings are on Wednesdays). Weekly curfew is at 10 pm and moves to 12 am on weekends. During the week, clients must spend the hours between 7:30 am to 4:30 pm either looking for employment or working. A peer coach is matched to each client to help them work through the phases of sobriety and set goals for getting back on their feet. Same day admissions are available and Step 13 accepts calls Mondays through Thursdays 8 am to noon and an admitted client is able to check in as long as they get to the facility by 2:30 pm on the same day.

Staff at Step 13 monitors the facility 24/7 and often the person on duty is one of the peer coaches.

Extras

Step 13 also provides clients with physical fitness equipment, as well as recreational and spiritual activities to help provide self-care and life balance. Through the partnership with Goodwill, clients have access to education, counseling, employment opportunities and career development.

In Summary

Step 13 has a longstanding tradition of helping men rebuild their lives for over 30 years. It was founded by a man passionate about his work and today, Step 13 provides structure, discipline and support to men who want to maintain their sobriety. It may not be luxurious, but its focus is on the work of real life recovery rather than pampering. What’s more, there is no limit to how long a resident can live at Step 13 and the cost is low enough to make recovery accessible for everybody.
