The Basics
Originally founded in 1861, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) is a full-service, behavioral health hospital based in Staten Island, New York. In addition to a range of primary care services, the facility offers treatment programs for those struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. Aside from detox and inpatient care, clients can also receive outpatient treatment as well.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients go through an initial intake and bio-psycho-social screening to help staff develop an individualized treatment plan. Clients in need of detox can do so on-site before continuing on to therapy. While the specifics of each plan may vary, clients attend both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices, such as CBT and DBT. Dual diagnosis support is readily available as are medication management services. Groups cover a range of topics including life skills, relapse prevention, codependency and education on addiction as a disease. Throughout the program, clients are also required to attend on and off-site 12-step meetings.
The staff at SIUH consists of CASACs, RNs, MDs, psychiatrists, psychologists and additional Master’s and PhD-level staff.

In addition to the more structured outpatient care, the hospital offers recovery readiness and harm prevention programs that include acupuncture and seminars on safe sex and drug use. Clients can receive condoms, bleach kits, HIV tests and standalone counseling and case management. Other specialized services include gender-specific treatment, DUI/DWI education and classes, support groups for Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) and services for the deaf and hard of hearing.
