The Starting Point Inc. of New Jersey began as a transitional home for alcoholics in 1977, but now serves as a coordinator or liaison for of substance abuse and mental health-related services in Haddon Township New Jersey for children, adults and adolescents. Founded by Vince DiPasquale, its services include educational lectures, over 20 free on-site meetings and counseling. The Starting Point has a team of over 45 professional practitioners, each with their own private office at the facility. All are trained mental health professionals who use a myriad of proven treatment modalities, including DBT and CBT.

Treatment and Staff

The Starting Point doesn’t offer a specific structured program, but rather has a menu of free meetings, workshops and guest lectures along with on-site counseling. AA meetings are offered on Friday and Saturday. The Friday night AA “Words & Wisdom” meeting is at 7 pm while the Saturday meeting takes place at noon. A recovering addict or alcoholic with at least 10 years of sobriety usually leads the meetings. Check out their Weekly Meetings page for all pertinent details.

While all meetings are free and open to the public, a donations basket is passed around at the end to raise funds for the facility. On Wednesday nights, there are educational and motivational lectures led by either DiPasquale or a guest speaker. DiPasquale has over 40 years of experience helping those with chemical dependency and his lectures cover topics including positive attitudes, healthy relationships, sexuality in recovery, self-esteem and spiritual growth.

The Starting Point’s curriculum is influenced by the 12 steps and often uses AA philosophy in their lectures. Other modalities for recovery and healing are offered and embraced, however. For example, for those not interested in 12-step related meetings, there is also an “Course in Miracles” meeting every Monday based on Helen Schucman’s book of the same name. This is an alternative, spiritual transformation group that begins at 6:30 pm and lasts for 30 minutes. “Recovery Inc” is a a support group for mental health that is held on Saturdays at 11:30 am and can be paired with AA/NA meetings to provide support for those with co-occurring disorders. Refuge Recovery meetings are held Mondays at 7:30 pm. This is a Buddhist-oriented path which asserts that “all individuals have the power and potential to free themselves from the suffering that is caused by addiction.” “Life Recovery using the Life Recovery Bible” meetings are also held on Thursdays at 7 pm.

Those interested in on-site counseling services must first go through an intake process, where a coordinator gathers insurance and clinical information. Because its counselors practitioners have different specializations, The Starting Point is able to offer specific help to accommodate individual needs. Staff are trained in treating those with LGBT concerns, adolescent co-occurring disorders, childhood trauma, eating disorders and co-dependency issues. While some counselors choose to focus solely on individual therapy, others offer couples, group and family therapy as well. Treatment modalities include evidence-based techniques like CBT, DBT and Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT).

Practitioners include LPCs, LADCs, LCSWs, LSWs, MSWs and spiritual\pastoral counselors (in addition to many other areas of specialization and certification.) Potential clients are encouraged to use their searchable practitioner page to generate a list of practitioner(s) that hold any number of particular specializations or certifications.

Extras

The Starting Point hosts lectures on meditation and holistic health, with sessions covering yoga and Tai Chi. Therapists also run parenting skills workshops to teach topics such as effective parenting, discipline, communication and reward strategies.

In Summary

The Starting Point is a resourceful facility for those interested in free support group meetings, referrals to quality counseling services and educational lectures. All services aim to provide added support for individuals struggling with chemical dependencies and mental health issues. The team at The Starting Point welcomes people from all walks of life that are interested in acquiring tools to live a healthy and sober life.
