START Treatment and Recovery Services Review
Formerly known as the Addiction Research and Treatment Corporation (ARTC), an organization founded in 1969 that provided clinics throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, the storied history of this community-oriented group has evolved into START—New York’s largest non-hospital provider of health services.
START has numerous locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan allowing clients easy access to healthcare. For clients in search of substance abuse and addiction treatment, START offers an outpatient program through the behavioral services sector. With a holistic approach to recovery, clients participate in both individual and group counseling and participate in the 12 steps of recovery.
Treatment and Staff
Clients who require a short-term detox program are enrolled in START’s 21- to 180-day program which includes treatment for opioid addiction.
START offers both an individual counseling track and an outpatient treatment program. Each client schedules individual sessions with an assigned staff member who manages their case and determines the regularity of sessions.
The more structured outpatient program uses an individualized treatment plan tailored to meet each client’s specific needs. Clients are typically scheduled for at least one individual session per week and are required to attend at least three two-hour group sessions per week. Family therapy can also be included in the program and is scheduled separately. All forms of therapy are based in CBT methodology and START fully integrates the 12-steps into the program.
The staff at the START program consists of LCSWs, LPCs, MFTs, CSACs and medical doctors.
Extras
In addition to their substance abuse treatment program, START offers numerous other health and human services to their clients including a family program, an adolescent program, social services and a wide range of medical services.
There is also a program for those with co-occurring disorders called REACH which focuses on integrating treatment for mental health issues with treatment for addiction and chemical dependency.
In Summary
Although the substance abuse treatment program is limited to outpatient care, it is comprehensive and offers a solid foundation for recovery. With detox and implementation of evidence-based therapies, the 12 steps and treatment for co-occurring disorders, START covers the bases for those seeking a well-rounded, affordable program.
