Stars Behavioral Health Group: Star View Adolescent Center Review
Star View Adolescent Center through Stars Behavioral Health Group is an inpatient treatment facility in Torrance, California, in the South Bay region of Greater Los Angeles. Its program is designed for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 who have experienced severe trauma or have emotional challenges. Treatment is individualized and utilizes evidence-based practices to offer therapy and psychoeducation to address anger issues, moral reasoning and skillstreaming. Programming is facilitated by highly trained and experienced mental health professionals who have extensive experience working with troubled youth.
Accommodations and Food
Star View has a total of 56 beds, 16 of which are reserved exclusively for psychiatric care. The center is on a large campus that contains a pool in addition to a covered recreation area and outdoor basketball court. The bedrooms are double occupancy with twin beds and there are shared bathrooms throughout the facility. A cafeteria offers three meals a day and snacks, and the clients eat together in the community dining room. There are also classrooms, and therapeutic and medical offices. Additionally, clients have access to a media room and computers.
Treatment and Staff
Star View is a locked facility in order to provide their young clients with a safe environment. Depending on where each client is on a daily basis, there are different levels of care. For those who are in need of emergency psychiatric stabilization, there is a hospital unit that provides the necessary medication. Those in the residential phase have regular group therapy and psychoeducational classes daily. There are also individual counseling sessions at on a weekly schedule at the minimum.
Treatment uses evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT and Behavioral Modification. There are also elements of expressive art therapy. Specialty focus is for dual diagnosis and trauma-informed care. Clients maintain their education while in treatment at the private, fully accredited educational facility called South Bay High School which is specifically for clients of Star View. This incorporates education and therapy within the confines of a supportive environment that caters to the clients specific needs, including any learning or social challenges. Additionally South Bay High School provides the same cultural events as any other school, like the prom.
The staff of Star View includes psychiatrists, LCSWs, LMFTs, case managers and child psychologists who have spent their entire careers working with this age group.
Extras
Clients have a variety of fun activities and community they participate in during their stay, like art and music classes. Family involvement is strongly encouraged, and both biological and foster families can participate in groups and classes if desired.
In Summary
Star View Adolescent Center is a blessing for so many young people who have experienced trauma. For most of the at risk youth who stay at this facility, there is a concern of long-term consequences if they don’t receive help and guidance when they are young, which could result in addiction and homelessness. Star Behavioral Health Group and Star View really offer a safe haven for these kids along with much needed assistance to help them get a leg up in life so they can grow up to be successful adults.
