Stars Behavioral Health Group: Central Star Youth Psychiatric Health Facility Review
Central Star Youth Psychiatric Health Facility, or PHF, is a Fresno based inpatient program for adolescents between the ages of 12 to 17 that operates through the California agency Stars Behavioral Health Group. This community based treatment facility focuses on individualized plans for youth struggling with severe mental health disorders and offers evidence-based therapy, medication management and extended aftercare services for clients and their families
Accommodations and Staff
The residential facility is set in the former 7100 square feet University Medical Center campus. The facility can accommodate 16 clients who share double occupancy bedrooms with private bathrooms en suite. The rooms aren’t numbered, but instead above the doorways are inspirational phrases in different languages. There is an industrial kitchen that serves meals cafeteria style, a recreation space, courtyard and common area that has a flat-screen, mounted TV. The grounds also contains a basketball court and fitness areas.
Treatment and Staff
Central Star is bases its programming on five phases. The first is the assessment and intake, followed by engagement, learning, stabilization and aftercare. Treatment heavily relies on the participation of the clients’ family members, as there is also a element of education and training for them as well. These trainings are to help them learn how to deal with anger management issues and improve communication skills.
There are group sessions on a daily basis and several individual sessions during the week. School work is maintained and for the older clients there are possible vocational training opportunities. Several different therapeutic approaches are employed, including trauma-informed CBT, EMDR, DBT and expressive therapies, like music and art. The schedule is constantly changing in terms of group therapy so that clients are positively stimulated and open to learning.
The staff consists of child psychologists, LCSWs, LMFTs, psychiatrists and therapists who specialize in behavioral issues in adolescents.

Family therapy can be offered as a group or individual basis.
In Summary
Before this facility opened family members had to take their children far away from home in order to receive the proper treatment for their acute psychiatric disorder. When Central Star finally opened after 12 years, many parents and loved ones breathed a collective sigh of relief, as youth mental health is now getting the direct attention it deserves from a trusted and reliable agency.
