The Basics
Located in Burlingame, a suburb just south of San Francisco, First Chance is an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility under the Star Vista umbrella. This program is offered to non-violent drug possession transgressors as an alternative to incarceration.
Treatment and Staff
First Chance offers a 24-hour short-term detox—Sobering Station—which is available to individuals arrested for DUIs/DWIs or public intoxication. Services include housing during the period of inebriation, substance abuse assessment, referral services and extended case management.
Clients enrolled in the basic outpatient program learn about anger management, domestic violence, mental health and parenting. Treatment includes participation in both individual and group therapy and group staff-to-client ratios are one to twelve. Clients meet weekly with their primary counselors for one-on-one sessions. Case management services as well as follow-up support and referrals to outside services are available as is support services for those with co-occurring disorders.
First Chance is not 12-step oriented but clients are encouraged to attend peer-support meetings to develop a fellowship in recovery.
Staff credentials include LCSWs and Master’s-level Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) counselors.
Summary
First Chance offers outpatient services for non-violent adults charged with drug possession and DUIs/DWIs. Detox services are also available for individuals charged alcohol and drug violations and public intoxication. It is the only facility under the Star Vista banner that has short-term detox.
