Stephenville TexasThe Basics

Star Council was founded in 1981 to provide outpatient substance abuse treatment to the residents of north central Texas. Now with five locations in Stephenville, Granbury, Cleburne, Decatur and Mineral Wells, it offers both standard outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). Star Council contracts with Texas Department of State Health Services and other state and local agencies to provide care to those at all income levels.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that combines individual and group therapy. Most clients attend individual therapy once a week and group therapy one- to three-times each week. While the duration of treatment plans is based on progress, most clients complete their treatment track in 10 to 12 weeks.

Therapy uses a variety of modalities such as CBT and other evidence-based methods, including Trauma Informed Care and Living in Balance. Groups max-out at a one-to-16 staff-to-client ratio and are led by LPCs and LCDCs. Gender-specific groups are available at the Glenberry, Clayburn Wells and Mineral Springs locations. Clients are encouraged—but not required—to attend 12-step or other peer support group meetings while in treatment.

While counselors at Star Council can address co-occurring disorders in group and individual therapy, referrals for local mental health clinics are available.

Extras

As clients near the end of treatment, counselors work with them to make a customized aftercare plan which typically includes attendance of 12-step or other peer-support meetings such as Refuge Recovery or Celebrate Recovery. Families of clients may attend the client’s individual therapy sessions if the client thinks it would be beneficial.

A unique feature of Star Council’s outpatient program is its parenting curriculum. Upon admission to a treatment track, clients who are parents are provided with dedicated classes on how substance use affects their parenting and how to improve their parenting skills.

Star Council also offers several supportive programs for children such as life skills training and summer camps. Its Universal Prevention Programs sponsor community and school events to educate the community about substance abuse and treatment options. Additionally, a Batterers Intervention and Prevention Program helps families end domestic violence through education and by teaching accountability.

In Summary

Star Council’s long history in north central Texas enables it to provide effective treatment and prevention programs tailored for the lifestyles and needs of local residents. By offering a well-structured outpatient program alongside services for children and domestic violence prevention and parenting skills, Star Council seeks to help all family members affected by the disease of a loved one’s addiction.
