The Basics
Located in the Atlanta suburb of Decatur, Georgia, Stand Inc. has been a hub for the local recovery community since 1999. Founded by Charles Sperling, Stand’s vision is to provide client-centric, peer-support driven intervention and outpatient recovery services. Today, Sperling is still active as executive director and Stand provides men with accessible, affordable and evidence-based treatment.
Accommodations and Food
As many clients have recently been released from prison, Stand accommodates them in off-site support housing. Men are divided into three Decatur-area townhouses. One of the houses sleeps four men in two dual-occupancy bedrooms, another has space for seven in three bedrooms, and the third sleeps three in two bedrooms. Each room has twin-sized beds and each house has two shared bathrooms.
There is a fully stocked kitchen and men are responsible for supplying their own food and preparing meals. The living room has a comfortable sofa and a television that is available for viewing until 11 pm.
Transportation is provided to a nearby renovated office complex where clients receive treatment and have access to the computer lab for vocational purposes including resume building and job-searching.
Treatment and Staff
Stand provides a post-detox 90-day Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with housing available for the duration. In addition to group therapy and weekly individual sessions, treatment methods include REBT, CBT, MRT, Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and the Matrix Model. Group topics include nutrition, creative expression, personal development, life skills, addiction education, and relapse prevention. Dual diagnosis support is provided for clients with co-occurring disorders. Stand encourages attendance at 12-step meetings, though it is not required. Upon request, clients have access to couples and family counseling.
Men are in group sessions from 9 am to 2 pm with a break for lunch from 12:30 to 1 pm. In between groups, clients are given 15-minute breaks and, once sessions are over, clients are free to attend 12-step or other recovery meetings and/or do step work, though they must find their own transportation. Lights out is at 11 pm.
With the exception of mobile phones, no outside electronics are permitted while clients are in treatment. Due to Stand’s confidentiality policy, no visitors are allowed on the properties though clients are given passes to visit loved ones after 30 days of positive progress and with a counselor’s approval.
Stand employs a mix of professionals including a medical doctor, LCSWs, LPCs, CACs, certified peer specialists, certified addiction recovery empowerment specialists and an addictionologist. Round-the-clock medical supervision and assistance is provided by assistant techs.
Extras
Extra-curricular outings include bowling, trips to the zoo and art museums, picnics at Stone Mountain and basketball games. Additionally, Stand offers HIV/STD testing and education, family violence intervention and DUI classes.
Stand also employs alternative treatment modalities including art and music therapies.
In Summary
Stand offers a non-traditional IOP for men in need of both housing and treatment for addiction. With special support for men re-entering society after incarceration, their peer-based recovery approach uses evidence-based treatment methods in group and individual therapy and addresses relapse prevention and dual-diagnosis support. This comprehensive facility is an affordable choice for men starting over with little-to-nothing.
