St. Vincents Hospital WestchesterSt. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester Inpatient Rehabilitation Program Review

The St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester Inpatient Rehabilitation Program was founded by the Sister of Charity of New York in 1897 in Harrison, a small town in Westchester County. The organization offers residential treatment to adult men and women struggling with substance abuse.

Accommodations and Food

The residential program is run out of St. Vincent’s Hospital. The program has the capacity to accommodate up to 30 residents at a time and has a total of 15 bedrooms. Each room has two twin beds and fresh bedding. Clients on each floor share a bathroom with one another. Men and women residents are in separate wings of the residential area.

St. Vincent’s provides three meals a day to clients. The food is prepared by the organization’s cooking staff and served in a cafeteria-style setting. Although the menu is set, the cooking staff does try to accommodate clients with strict dietary restrictions or allergies.

For recreation, the staff takes clients on walks throughout the surrounding area during the day when the weather permits. Clients are also highly encouraged to bring books to read during their time in treatment.

Although clients are not allowed to bring in outside electronics or anything that can be plugged into a wall, the building does have a pay phone for their usage.

Treatment and Staff

Individuals interested in St. Vincent’s residential program begin the intake process with an initial meeting with one of the organization’s rehab coordinators. Incoming clients must have first attended an outpatient program for at least six months but are still struggling to maintain sobriety, before being eligible for St. Vincent’s residential program. If a bed is open, clients meet with a counselor to help chart out a potential treatment plan. If the client is in need of detox or undergoing withdrawal symptoms, they are referred to an outside detox program prior to beginning treatment.

Although the average length of the program is 28 days, the stay is also somewhat dependent on the number of days covered by each client’s insurance. Also, participation in St. Vincent’s is completely voluntary and clients are allowed to leave at any time they wish.

The therapy consists of both group and individual counseling. Counselors focus on helping clients identify symptoms and triggers of their addiction and learn how to manage their stress and emotions. Group meetings focus on education, sharing, spirituality, family issues, anger management and relapse prevention. Counselors use a variety of treatment techniques including CBT, psychoeducation and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). St. Vincent’s embraces the principles of AA/NA recovery and counselors use the 12 steps in the group meetings. Individual sessions are available based on the needs of the client.

St. Vincent’s is dual diagnosis, and offers medication management for clients with potential co-occurring disorders.

The counselors at St. Vincent’s consist of a mixture of LCSWs, CASACs and mental health counselors.

Extras

St. Vincent’s offers individual family sessions with the client, counselor and their family members. Clients must initially request these meetings before the counselor can schedule them.

The organization also offers aftercare in the form of clients regularly checking in with counselors once they have left the program. Clients are also encouraged to step down to one of St. Vincent’s outpatient options after they complete the residential program.

In Summary

St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Program offers intensive and comprehensive residential treatment to adult men and women in Harrison, New York. The wide variety of therapy and treatment techniques allows counselors to specifically address each client’s individual needs.
