In the small city of Armidale located between Sydney and Brisbane, Australia, The St. Vincent de Paul Society offers residential and community-based treatment programming for clients struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders. The facility is called Freeman House.  It also provides care for clients with co-occurring mental health conditions like depression, bipolar disorder and trauma. Freeman House seeks to not only treat symptoms but also to empower clients by addressing their social and financial needs. While Freeman House does not implement 12-step, it does employ an integrative treatment model that includes evidence-based and medication management.

Accommodations and Food

Freeman House is equipped for 24 residents and another four for individuals in detox. The facility considers privacy to be an important component in beginning recovery. To this end, all clients stay in their own room furnished with a twin sized-bed and basic furnishings. Bathrooms are share, and the facility also has several common areas and therapy rooms.

Clients enjoy healthy and nutritious meals prepared to replenish the body. Individuals with dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

During intake clients undergo a comprehensive assessment that includes a personal and family history, an account of alcohol and substance use as well as a psychological evaluation. The team then creates Aan individualized treatment strategy based off of the results of the assessment. When necessary, they transition residents immediately into detox. Through a partnership with University medicine programs, the Freeman House is able to provide a medical detox that includes constant supervision and medication to curb painful withdrawal symptoms. Freeman House offers a flexible residential program that can last between three and 12 months.

Freeman House utilizes a multifaceted approach to care that includes a number of therapeutic modalities including life skills training, psychoeducation, holistic methods, recreation and counseling. Residents engage in individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based models as well as psychoeducation courses in the disease of addiction. 

The Freeman House team is made up of counselors, case managers and a house manager. Clients with co-occurring mental illnesses receive medication management through partners.

Extras

The facility also offers art and music therapy as well as mindfulness meditation sessions and yoga. Clients exercise at the fitness center and routinely go on supervised outings. The facility promotes a strengths-based curriculum to motivate clients and equip them with the necessary tools to succeed in life. As such, Freeman House provides financial and social skills as well as personal development classes.

Freeman House also offers specialized case management and advocacy services for men with children.
