St. Stephen’s House of London Review

St. Stephen’s House of London, Ontario in Canada is a men’s only long term residential program that is based on the 12-step philosophies. St. Stephen’s House was originally conceived by Sister St. Patrick in 1973 as a safe and clean, home-like environment for men who were affected by addiction to go and learn how to get and stay sober. These days St. Stephen’s House in an independant, not for profit program that offers their clients a place to learn how to live in recovery while giving back to others.

Accommodations and Food

This program is able to accommodate up to nine men at once in a house in Northwest London. The facility is in a safe and quiet neighborhood that is close to several AA and NA meetings. Shared spaces within the home are the living room with TV, dining room and kitchen.

Meals are served at this facility every day. Some of the meals are prepared for the clients while others are made by the men for the house.

Treatment and Staff

St. Stephen’s House does not put a time limit on how long clients can reside in the facility and partkate in the program. On average clients stay for about two years, though there are some clients who live there for up to four.

The program is within a family oriented atmosphere that teaches responsibility, accountability and discipline with the intention of having them eventually return to their communities. Clients are expected to immerse themselves in the support community by attending meetings every day and obtaining a sponsor. There are several house rules that every resident has to follow, like completing daily chores and tasks, outreach or volunteering, and Big Book study.

Every Tuesday evening the house hosts an open 12-step meeting. In addition, St. Stephen’s House also offers a weekly skills program and relapse prevention meeting. During these meetings clients have guest speakers or workshops. There are also several sober events and fellowship opportunities that clients are encouraged to participate in.

This program is run by Bev Thomson, who took over the operations after retiring from a local treatment center. However the day to day operations are maintained by about 40 volunteers who are graduates of the program.

In Summary

St. Stephens House is a rare find. They don’t kick their clients out of the program when they think they are ready to go. Instead, they allow the men to remain in the house for as long as they need support, and give them a safe place to live along with guidance on how to live a long and healthy, drug free, life.
