The Basics
Located in Decatur, Illinois, St. Mary’s Hospital offers a co-ed Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Decatur—a small city three hours southwest of Chicago and two hours northeast of St. Louis, MO—has the distinction of being the only area hospital to offer a full range of Behavioral Health services. Home to many manufacturing and agricultural businesses (such as Archer Daniels Midland and Caterpillar, Inc.), Decatur is also known for being the first Illinois home of Abraham Lincoln.
St. Mary’s previously had an inpatient program, which was eliminated to expand the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The IOP has been in operation for 15 years.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients are offered a customized treatment plan which includes group therapy and individual counseling. St. Mary’s also offers a medical detox in a hospital setting, and clients are admitted as needed.
Groups are led by therapists and addiction counselors including LADCs. St. Mary’s describes itself as “12-step inspired,” but the therapeutic groups focus on problem-solving techniques employing various modalities.
Clients attend a combination of education and therapy groups. In the education groups, they’re given information about the disease of addiction, while the therapy groups focus on life skills and emotional regulation. For 12-step meetings, clients may attend either St. Mary’s-hosted on-site meetings or else off-site meeting referrals.
Groups vary in size, but generally the staff-to-client ratio is one-to-ten. The program offers dual diagnosis support; as an advantage of the hospital setting, St. Mary’s clients are supported by a full team of psychiatrists, nurses and nutritionists in addition to the counselors and therapists they see for individual and group therapy. While St. Mary’s no longer offers residential treatment, clients are admitted into the IOP who have completed residential programs elsewhere. Most clients stay in the IOP for 2-3 months.
Extras
As a service to the community and a means of supporting clients once they’ve completed treatment, St. Mary’s hosts many support meetings throughout the month including parenting and pregnancy classes and 12-step meetings that are open to the public.
In Summary
St. Mary’s is an expansive and well-tested program and the most comprehensive mental health facility in its area. Many of its staff have been working locally and in the Hospital for over a decade and are sensitive to the needs of the community. Having access to the medical resources of the hospital is another advantage to seeking treatment at St. Mary’s.
