Oakland CaliforniaThe Basics

Located in Oakland, St. Mary’s Center is a California-based nonprofit that works with the homeless population. Founded in 1939 through St. Mary’s Church, the congregation wished to provide services for the under-served children of the Oakland community and created tuition-free schooling. Services have evolved over the decades, and in 1992 SMC began offering housing and ancillary services including the Recovery 55 program, an outpatient chemical dependency treatment program tailored specifically for homeless seniors.

Treatment and Staff

The Recovery 55 program is a targeted treatment effort out of Alameda County Behavioral Healthcare. Seniors over the age of 55 who are at risk for homelessness, are formerly homeless or are currently homeless are eligible.

The program creates individualized treatment plans for each client with a holistic approach to wellness. Staff provides assistance with chemical dependency, co-occurring disorders and life strategies. There is no detox available at the facility, but clients may be referred out if needed.

Prior to admission, all clients are assessed by staff to determine if there’s a need for dual diagnosis support. Sessions are scheduled Monday through Friday in the mornings for approximately three hours, and clients attend both group and individual therapy.

Treatment at Recovery 55 is very individualized, and as such, clients are not required to attend every day. Additionally, there is no minimum or maximum duration for enrollment, but clients typically participate for at least one month. The program uses evidence-based practices that include CBT and Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) techniques.

Services are provided by LPCs as well as CADCs. Counselors also offer referrals for community resources such as 12-step meetings as well as services for health care and housing.

Extras

St. Mary’s Center provides services such as emergency winter housing for homeless clients and housing services for seniors. The facility is small, but offers individual rooms for the clients so they may acclimate quickly to their new surroundings. Clients also work with a case manager to eventually transition into their own homes.

In Summary

St. Mary’s Center offers chemical dependency treatment and housing services for individuals in the Oakland area who are struggling with homelessness, addiction and mental health issues. Recovery 55 is specially designed to directly meet the unique needs of seniors who lack the financial means to enroll in more expensive treatment programs. Treatment is individualized, evidence-based and tailored to the client, with flexible hours.
