New York New yorkThe Basics

St. Mark’s Institute for Mental Health is an outpatient facility located in New York, New York developed specifically to help Polish and other Eastern European and Slavic populations receive mental health care and chemical dependency treatment. As a branch of the Unitas network, SMI is part of a non-profit group that offers diverse and culturally sensitive care in New York City’s East Village. Refugees and immigrants are given specialized care with dual diagnosis support available.

Services are offered in English, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Slovak and Yiddish. Individualized treatment is available, allowing clients to have a unique recovery experience. Clients attend treatment at a basic outpatient pace, allowing for flexibility around life and work schedules.

Treatment and Staff

The Outpatient Chemical Dependence Program (OCDP) was developed in 2002 and primarily treats clients using the 12-step framework as well as therapy that incorporates CBT. Clients attend group and individual therapy at the facility Monday through Saturday between 9 am to 9 pm.

During treatment hours, clients attend groups that focus on relapse prevention techniques as well as the development of support networks. Services are available for both adults and adolescents struggling with addiction as well as any co-occurring disorders.

Clients are treated by a multilingual staff of CADCs and Master’s-level practitioners. All clients are also seen by psychiatrists and physicians who may prescribe Antabuse and Naltrexone for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). Medication management is also available for those requiring prescriptions for mental health issues. The Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers Program gives clients more ancillary approaches, treating mental illness alongside or even before chemical dependency.

Extras

Specialized programs are available for sufferers of traumatic brain injuries, those who are federal probationers or parolees and battered women. These programs have special ties with the court system and clients can be enrolled in tandem with the outpatient chemical dependency programs.
