St. Joseph’s Addiction Treatment and Recovery Center has a rich history stretching back to 1940 when the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement purchased the 28-acre property known as Rumsey Cottage in Saranac Lake, New York to establish a friary. In 1970 Father J. Leon Kotsko proposed that the Friars establish a center to help male alcoholics. Today approximately 1,300 men, women, teens and their families seek treatment at St. Joseph’s Addiction and Treatment Center annually.
Accommodations and Food
The spacious Rumsey estate, one of the oldest in the Adirondacks, is home to the 65-bed co-educational inpatient facility. Rooms are shared and clients are encouraged to engage in outdoor activities in the facility’s mountain environment, such as nature walks, hiking and volleyball. The underlying philosophy is that recreational pursuits build stamina, confidence and mental and physical strength. Clients have access to TVs, social sitting areas and organized recreational activities.
Meals are provided and special consideration is given to dietary restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
Clients undergo comprehensive evaluations to create individualized treatment plans. Treatment is based on the 12-step program and includes confrontation (a counseling technique used to help the client examine his/her avoidance defenses), group and individual therapy. St. Joseph’s does not provide detox; clients must be “dry” and withdrawn from mood-altering drugs for at least seven days prior to admittance.
The residential program typically lasts 90 days, but if additional time is needed, an extended stay is possible. St. Joseph’s Addiction and Treatment Center’s philosophy is that a lengthened, holistic approach to chemical dependency treatment is effective in attaining and maintaining sobriety.
CEO Bob Ross is the fourth in the facility’s history and has more than 30 years of addiction treatment experience. Mr. Ross leads a trained staff of 139 doctors, therapists, clinicians and recovery experts.
Yoga, Tai Chi, aerobics, hiking and arts and crafts classes are available as well as pastoral care services that focus on spirituality, grief issues, forgiveness, prayer and meditation.
St. Joseph’s works with each client to set goals and create action plans for continuing recovery in their aftercare program. Inpatient residents are asked to consider aftercare planning from the outset of treatment, which may include a stay of three months in a guest house or six months to a year or more in a community residence or other alcohol and drug-free residence upon successful completion of St. Joseph’s inpatient program.
St. Joseph’s is a solid choice for those who are interested in a religious and recovery experience amidst an idyllic mountain setting.
