St. Joseph Institute for AddictionThe Basics

St. Joseph Institute for Addiction is a holistic treatment center set in the quiet forest of Port Matilda, a small town in central Pennsylvania. With acres and acres of lush foliage, clients are able to immerse themselves in the peaceful solitude of nature. While this facility is Christian-based, it is non-denominational, accepting people from all religions and spiritual paths. St. Joseph stresses “the importance of God in healing from addiction,” but also uses many therapeutic practices as well as holistic healing methods. Through this combination of tradition and non-traditional, spiritual and physical, St. Joseph gives clients a full array of treatment options in a breathtaking environment.

Accommodations and Food

Located on 207 acres, St. Joseph has an impressive campus. The accommodations at St. Joseph are warm, welcoming and have a rustic feel. Housed in a large, wooden home, clients share a small bedroom with one other person. Each bedroom features a country home aesthetic, with two twin beds and windows that overlook the property. Clients can watch television in the common room or relax by the massive brick fireplace in the great room. While many rehabs ban the use of personal electronics, St. Joseph does allow clients to bring their cell phones, which can be accessed during designated times.

All meals are shared in the dining room, with healthy options prepared by the resident chef three times a day. Most of the ingredients are organic and the menu includes such items as salad, roast beef, hamburgers, pizza, chicken and salmon. Special needs and dietary requests such as vegetarian/vegan can be accommodated.

The log cabin getaway vibe extends throughout the entire campus at St. Joseph. Clients have access to the wellness center, which features a computerized massage bed, Jacuzzi, sauna and pool. When it comes to recreation, a full gym is available in the mornings. For those who enjoy getting outside, the property also features miles of walking trails, gardens, and basketball and tennis courts. Smoking breaks can be taken outdoors during free time and in between groups.

Treatment and Staff

St. Joseph treats clients who are typically between the ages of 20 and 65, specializing in drug and alcohol addiction, trauma and abuse, PTSD, pain management and co-occurring disorders. Medically monitored on-site detox is available when needed. All clients go through 30 to 90 days filled with individual therapy, group therapy, bodywork, nutritional therapy, family therapy and educational sessions.

While many rehabs only offer individual counseling once a week, St. Joseph views one-on-one treatment as integral to a strong recovery. Clients meet with their primary therapist three times a week, allowing them to explore areas of trauma and mental health in depth. Group topics focus around educating residents about addiction, meditation, the 12 steps, relapse prevention and processing. The therapy process also involves family members, welcoming them onto the campus for educational lectures and group sessions with the primary therapist.

A typical day in treatment begins at 7 am with morning prayer and yoga. Breakfast is from 8 to 8:45 am followed by a recovery education and process group from 9 to 11 am. Individual therapy is held from 11 am to 12 pm followed by lunch. More individual therapy is from 1 to 2 pm followed by personal time from 2 to 3 pm. Bodywork or journaling can be done from 3 to 4 pm. A guided meditation is held from 4 pm to 4:45 followed by personal time from 5 to 5:30 pm. Dinner is held from 5:30 to 6 pm followed by phone time and an on-site AA meeting from 6:30 to 8 pm. Evening prayer is held from 8 to 8:45 pm followed by free time from 8:45 pm to 10:30 until lights out.

St. Joseph boasts a five-to-one client-to-staff ratio, with counselors who have at least a Master’s degree. The team, many of whom have extensive backgrounds in addiction, also includes on-site nurses, a medical director and a psychiatrist.

Extras

In addition to the traditional therapy approach, St. Joseph offers holistic treatments like massage and nutritional supplements as a way to heal from the inside out, allowing the brain fog to clear and the body to regain full strength. Prayer, meditation and the 12 steps help clients acquire a sense of spirituality. And many rehabs charge additional fees for things like massage, St. Joseph includes all holistic services in the monthly fee.

In Summary

For those looking for a log cabin recovery getaway, St. Joseph offers an individualized treatment program in a beautiful setting. With intensive one-on-one therapy, a slew of holistic treatments and state-of-the-art amenities, clients can discover a natural, active lifestyle and a higher power, all in the same setting.
