St. Francis Community Services Residential Review
St. Francis Community Services was established in 1945 with a focus on youth who were struggling with mental and behavioral health and addiction. This facility offers programs throughout the Midwest with residential treatment locations in Salina, Kansas—about three hours from Kansas City. These programs offer evidence-based treatment methods, psychoeducation and trauma-informed care for boys and girls between the ages of six and 18.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facility was recently built in 2015 and offers state-of-the-art, spacious and comfortable accommodations. There are 42 slots available, with the male and female clients sleeping in separate wings. The dorm-style bedrooms have twin beds and ample storage space. The facility also features a dining hall, library, large kitchen and living room with TV, games and books. There is also a medical facility, classrooms, private meeting rooms and a chapel—which offers a safe and quiet space for the clients to meditate or quietly reflect.
There are several recreational activities available, including an on-site gym with weights and cardio equipment, instructor-led exercise, ropes course, swimming pool and various indoor/outdoor sports. Clients frequently participate in off campus recreation as well, like horseback riding, hiking, fishing or biking. There are also days for crafting, art classes and social outings.
Health and nutrition are considered important factors at St. Francis Community Services. The staff dietician designs a meal plan and works closely with the cooking staff to prepare balanced and healthful food three times a day, including snacks.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment offers spiritual guidance in combination with holistic approaches. A structured schedule of daily group therapy and education is created on an individualized basis, focusing on the specific age and developmental stage of each client. Individual sessions are scheduled as needed. Some treatment methods include CBT and equine therapy, in addition to teaching independent living skills, CPR, money management and sex education. There are also medical, dental and vision services provided upon admission.
Treatment emphasizes personal safety and treatment goals, aiming to improve communication with family members, anger management and establish healthy boundaries. For the most part, the programs cater to youth who have experienced some sort of trauma and offers stress management techniques along with coping techniques. While 12-step principles are a part of St. Francis’ outpatient program, it is not a major component of residential treatment.
Clients with co-occurring disorders are provided with additional psychiatric and medication management services. The residential staff includes RNs, a psychologist, LCSWs, LPCs and youth service workers.
Extras
Family counseling and involvement is highly emphasized. There is also an aftercare program for clients who are slightly older and transitioning out of the residential or outpatient programs.
