St. Christopher’s Addiction Wellness Center (STC) is an expansive substance abuse treatment organization in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A full continuum of care is offered for men 18 and over, with detox, residential, outpatient, extended care, sober living and aftercare programs available. Its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is open to adult women, as well. STC’s personalized approach to recovery is based on the 12-step philosophy and incorporates evidence-based practices. The programs also include dual diagnosis support, if necessary.

St. Christopher’s in Baton Rouge originally began as a halfway house for men but had to close in 1994. Dwayne Beason was a resident at the halfway house in the late 80s and credits his success and long-term sobriety to his six-month stay. When he attended a wedding in 1997, he looked around the room and realized there were 10 men there, still sober, who had all lived at St. Christopher’s together nearly a decade before. Inspired by this tight group of friends who helped him in his own early recovery, Beason founded the new St. Christopher’s Addiction Wellness Center in 1998.

Accommodations and Food

St. Christopher’s is made up of several different facilities, all within a 10-minute drive. The administrative offices, primary care and detox are in one location, while extended care and the wellness center are in adjacent homes a few blocks away. The sober living apartments are also close by.

Up to 16 men reside in the primary care facility in semi-private bedrooms shared among two or three residents. Rooms come furnished with twin beds, closets, bedding and linens with adjoining bathrooms that have tubs and showers.

All meals are prepared on-site by a chef and served at set times in the dining room. Dietary restrictions can usually be accommodated upon request.

Treatment and Staff

Clients requiring detox begin with medically-monitored care for three to five days; during which, staff administers safe and appropriate medications to make clients as comfortable as possible. A nurse is available 24 hours-a-day, with a doctor checking in regularly. Those with co-occurring disorders are offered additional psychological support and medication management.

After detox, the residential program lasts about 30 days. Clients have group daily and individual therapy several times a week. Treatment employs various therapeutic approaches like DBT, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Specialized tracks for trauma and sex addiction are also available. Relapse prevention and life skills training are incorporated to prepare clients for more independent living. Clients are also transported to regular 12-step meetings.

Extended care is the 60 days following primary care at the main STC facility. Men move a few miles away, to a small community of adjacent homes, where they share living space with one or two other guys. They continue rigorous daily treatment, including at least five group and individual sessions a week, but with more freedom in their daily schedules. They begin to shop for their own groceries and cook their own meals. The recovery home phase of treatment takes place at the same location for an additional 30 to 60 days after extended care. Clients are encouraged to apply for work and school during this period and create a plan of action for sober living or aftercare.

The staff includes physicians, nurses, Master’s-level CADCs, LPCs, LCSWs and residential staff that are available 24 hour sa day. Many of the staff members are graduates of the STC programs or are also in recovery.

St. Christopher’s clients have access to the wellness center facility that has cardio machines, weights and opportunities for yoga classes and massage therapy.

The aftercare plan can include referrals to an outpatient facility in the client’s home community or an opportunity to continue on with the STC programs. These include moving to the extended care house, recovery home or sober living and continuing outpatient treatment. STC’s complimentary aftercare is available in the form of ongoing weekly groups for up to a year after the completion of primary treatment.

In Summary

St. Christopher’s Addiction Wellness Center offers a structured and supportive environment staffed with experienced professionals. It provides a full continuum of care for men to begin their recovery and with extended care options, clients can benefit from long-term support. This is a great choice for men looking for 12-step based treatment in Baton Rouge.

  1. Going to keep this brief and objective as possible. I was a patient at STC Addiction Wellness for around a year, these are some experiences and observations.
-Employees showed personal engagement and investment in clients wellness including mine – going beyond required duties.
-Detox protocol was individualized and medical supervision was good.
-Psychiatry aspect was mostly appropriate and responsible.
-Long Term program taught very basic life skills.
-Primary phase nutrition was very poor. Little to no fruit and vegetables, lots of fatty meats with gravy and bread.
-“Techs” had physical altercation(s) with clients, inappropriate temperament, incompetent and poorly trained.
-Communication and management between departments was a constant issue.
-One size fits all “treatment” program. Teenaged Marijuana users receive same treatment as middle aged Heroin addicts and severe alcoholics.
-Poor group facilitation by mostly uneducated CITs.

That’s all I will write. Very little difference between STC and most treatment centers, not reflected in price. Would recommend for teens with behavior issues, not for others.

  2. I have worked in the field of Addiction Treatment for over 15 years, and have referred many young men to St. Christopher’s. I have never heard anything from the clients and their families except glowing reports. Over the years I have gotten to know the staff and they are a wonderful group and are always willing to go to any lengths to help those they serve.

In addition to referring numerous clients over the years, I also took my son there for treatment. When it became evident that he needed a great degree of professional help, I knew exactly where he was going to get the best care for his needs. The staff was so compassionate with him and our family. In that moment, all of my experience and training as a professional vanished. I had zero concerns when entrusting his and our care in them and knew he was in the best program in the country to address his issues. They stayed in contact with us and offered practical direction to help heal our family as a whole. They were not solely focused on him, but on our entire family system. It was a life changing experience for us all. I took him there as a confused and lost soul and he came home 13 months later as an incredible and focused young man with a plan for his future. He has been sober for over 2 years and now he works in the treatment field as a result of the example of St. Christopher’s staff and what they offered him.

There is not a better place for young men to find direction and become who God intends them to be!!!!!!!!!
