Petaluma CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 2000 by Veronica Jacobsen about 40 miles north of San Francisco in the small town of Petaluma, California, SRW Solid Recovery for Women provides highly structured and safe sober living. SRW Solid Recovery provides clients with tools, including a 12-step protocol and meditation, so that they can learn to be happy and healthy while staying clean and sober. At SRW Solid Recovery, the belief is in women aiding women, while they connect with their inner strength.

Accommodations and Amenities

SRW Solid Recovery is located inside a spacious house, which includes two fully equipped kitchens, six bedrooms, two bathrooms and common areas. The home has a ten-bed capacity. Clients are paired in comfortably furnished rooms. Amenities include Wi-Fi, a house computer with Internet, television with Comcast service, landline with domestic long distance calling, fresh linens, towels, and laundry detergent, cleaning supplies and a washer and dryer.

The fully equipped kitchens are stocked with groceries and non-perishable canned goods and food, which are donated from local food pantries. The women are divided into two teams. Each team takes turns picking up food donations and preparing meals. Jacobsen supplies coffee, spices, oils, eggs, cheese and other necessities. Two house managers, who are former residents, live on the premises and oversee operations.

Rules and Regulations

At SRW Solid Recovery, potential clients undergo an assessment to ensure that the house is a proper fit. Additionally, they must have already completed detox. Clients must commit to a six-month minimum length of stay, but it is not uncommon for women stay for years. During the first three days, clients participate in a blackout period. Requirements include attendance at daily prayer and meditation at 8:15 am, performance of household chores and participation at 90 12-step meetings in 90 days.

Besides going to AA/NA meetings, clients are required to participate in one weekly telephone or online 12-step meeting. This is based on the belief that, should illness arise, there will always be a meeting on hand. Additionally, clients must acquire a sponsor within their first week of arrival. Maintaining an active relationship with their sponsor, as well as working the steps is mandated.

After 90 days, clients must scale back their meetings and attend between three and five weekly. Clients must also be present at house meetings and participate in a weekly Big Book study. The curfew is 10:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 12:30 am Fridays and Saturdays. Holiday curfew time is determined on a case-by-case basis. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. A zero tolerance policy is enforced, and residents who relapse are dismissed from the premises.

Extras

The house managers, along with Jacobsen, who is a counselor and has 23 years of sobriety, are on hand to offer support.

In Summary

SRW Solid Recovery is a gem. Women who are looking at gender-specific recovery options in the Bay Area should consider this comfy 12 step-based community. The women form a strong sense of solidarity, which is beneficial for newly clean and sober women. SRW Solid Recovery is so popular that there is not much turnaround. However, interested clients should make contact, as staff is enthusiastic about helping women in recovery.
