Pasadena CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 2016 by Michael Bloom in Pasadena, California, Spruce House provides high-end sober living to a small group of men in early recovery. Bloom is the owner of the Pasadena Recovery Center, a facility that he co-founded with his father, the late Dr. Lee Bloom. Spruce House fulfilled Bloom’s dream of opening a safe and structured sober living, which is in close proximity to his treatment facility.

Accommodations and Amenities

Spruce House is in a cul de sac across from Jackie Robinson Park. Boasting mountain views, the house has earth toned stucco walls, a pristine lawn and a row of spruce trees bordering the front yard. Spruce House accommodates six men, who are paired in spacious rooms furnished with twin or full-sized beds with headboards, dressers and nightstands. The sunny house is decorated with eclectic furnishings.

Clients are provided with a daily breakfast. They are responsible for other meals, which can be prepared in a huge, fully equipped kitchen. Amenities include cable TV, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, a private fenced front yard as well as a shady backyard. Mark Lytle, the house manager, has been clean and sober for over 13 years, and provides on-site support to clients.

Rules and Regulations

Spruce House is geared for men who have successfully completed residential treatment. While a few clients are Pasadena Recovery Center alumni, attendance at the facility is not a mandatory prerequisite for admittance. A three-month minimum length of stay is encouraged.

Requirements include attending a minimum of five weekly 12-step meetings, performance of household chores, working the steps, and being productive during the day, whether it be working, going to an outpatient program, doing volunteer work or attending school. Some residents participate in an outpatient program at Pasadena Recovery Center. Clients must wake up at in the morning, eat breakfast, do their chores, and leave the house, so that they can work at being productive, while focusing on their sobriety. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight Fridays and Saturdays.

At Spruce House, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Depending on the severity of the situation, residents who relapse either go to detox or are dismissed from the premises. They are allowed to return on a case-by-case basis.

Extras

The house is located within close proximity to many 12-step meetings.

In Summary

Spruce House is a beautiful home, and clients enjoy a sense of brotherhood, which is an asset in early recovery. Lytle is passionate about recovery, and helping his clients become empowered. And the house is connected to a reputable drug rehab. This an excellent option for men in the area.
