The Basics
Founded in 1972, SPIRITT Family Services is a family-oriented mental health and substance abuse treatment organization with two locations in Whittier, California. While the majority of its services are aimed at children and families, all are welcome. Programs for addiction and co-occurring disorders are available on an outpatient basis with flexible scheduling.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients undergo an initial assessment and intake process so that staff may develop an individualized treatment plan. While the specifics of each plan may vary, all programs are comprised of individual and group therapy with a particular focus on family dynamics and addiction as a family disease. Treatment uses strength-based and evidence-based practices, such as DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). While clients are not necessarily required to attend 12-step meetings, they may be encouraged to do so and can get referrals upon request.
Staff includes LMFTs, MDs, MFTs, MSWs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Additional services include youth development classes for at-risk adolescents, like the CLARO Program for Young Men that provides students with positive male role models and the WINDOWS Family Communication group for resolving domestic conflicts, as well as the CHOICES Youth Conference that brings in motivational speakers to address teens in grades nine through 11. The facility also provides a number of parenting classes to young mothers and fathers, including support and counseling for depressed and addicted pregnant women, as well as to grandparents who are acting as parents to their grandchildren.
