The Basics
Spectrum Human Services provides outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment to the residents of Erie and Wyoming counties in western New York State. Founded over 40 years ago, Specturm Human Services has four locations in Erie county (including two in Buffalo) and one facility in Wyoming county. Its Erie county locations offer treatment for co-occurring disorders. Spectrum Human Services was the first facility in western New York to fully integrate mental health treatment into its substance abuse treatment tracks.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients receive a treatment plan which includes both individual and group therapy. The duration of the program is progress-based depending on each client’s ability to achieve their treatment goals. Most clients attend individual therapy once a week and group sessions up to three times each week, bringing treatment up to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level.
Therapy groups contain up to 15 participants and use a variety of evidence-based modalities including CBT. Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors including CSWs, LMSWs, CASACs and LPCs. Therapists at Spectrum have extensive training in trauma treatment and co-occurring disorders. Its behavioral health department provides medication and case management services for those with significant mental health diagnoses.
Twelve-step meeting attendance isn’t required as part of treatment, but it is highly recommended. Counselors also emphasize peer support meetings as an important component of aftercare.
Extras
Families of clients in treatment can attend individual therapy if the client and therapist believe it would be beneficial. Spectrum also provides supportive housing for adults who struggle with independent living. Its Assertive Community Treatment Program (ACT) helps adults with mental health diagnoses coordinate care and master life skills when other interventions have proved unsuccessful.
