Established in 1976, Specialized Assistance Services (SAS) is a CARF-accredited, Chicago-based agency that offers comprehensive treatment services for men, women and families struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The outpatient services include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), standard care, step-down treatment and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). All programming facilitates group and individual therapy, medication management and psychoeducation in a supportive atmosphere. There are also specialized groups including ones for clients who are pregnant or postpartum and those who are referred by the criminal justice system.

Treatment and Staff

SAS aims to provide each client with a dignified experience that boosts self esteem through education and counseling. The majority of the clients at SAS have a dual diagnosis or have been referred by the department of corrections. During the initial assessment, a case manager designs and individualized treatment plan that accounts for the client’s current socio-economic status and past substance abuse. Some individuals are referred to the facility’s residential treatment program.

The IOP track usually lasts about six weeks and offers up to four days a week of treatment, which includes group and individual therapy, and then steps down to three or less days a week. After the IOP, clients typically participate in outpatient treatment for about three months.

There are specialized treatment tracks that focus on co-occurring disorders. In addition to group and individual therapy, clients work with a psychiatrist who facilitates medication management. There are also programs specifically designed for parents who have dealt with addiction as a coping method from depression or anxiety related to parenthood. This program offers relapse prevention and relaxation techniques, along with anger management and stress relief.

Treatment methods vary between clients and can include CBT or 12-step recovery implementation. MAT, also referred to in this network as Opioid Maintenance Therapy (OMT), is ongoing and offers one individual therapy session a week in addition to daily doses of methadone. Regular drug tests ensure the client is staying clean while in the program and as they progress, clients able to lessen both their dosage and the frequency of therapy.

The staff of Specialized Assistance Services includes a psychiatrist, CADCs and LCSWs.

Extras

Additional services include couples and family counseling services, HIV testing and continuing education classes. Transportation can be provided for clients who qualify and aftercare groups are also available.

The main objective is helping clients achieve and maintain a sober, healthy lifestyle. Evidence-based practices, 12-step and MAT, if applicable, are offered; as are resources for co-occurring disorders, court-referred clients and other specialized groups. All this makes Specialized Assistance Services a solid treatment option for a variety of clients.
