Spearhead Lodge Review
Spearhead Lodge is a long-term residential treatment facility that offers specialized care for young adults, ages 18 to 30, in the suburbs of Austin, Texas. As part of the BRC Recovery family of programs, Spearhead was created in 2016 to address the unique issues young people face while struggling to stay clean and sober. Spearhead welcomes clients who are transitioning out of inpatient care or detox, and also those brand new to recovery. Treatment is gender-specific and based around the 12 steps.
Accommodations and Food
The program at Spearhead Lodge is located on a gated acre and a half compound about 30 miles from downtown Austin. There are three houses on the property. Men and women are housed separately, and there’s room for about 20 men and 18 women. Both women and men can expect to have several roommates in dorm-style bedrooms. There are daily room checks and every client must complete morning chores.
TV watching is limited to 30 minutes during the week and a couple of hours on the weekends. Cell phones are only allowed for one 10-minute call per week.
The clientele at Spearhead Lodge eat together in their respective dining rooms. Basic cold breakfast food is set up on weekdays, with cereal, bagels and fruit available daily. The houses take turns cooking meals together every night and eating family-style. The menu tends to consist of favorites like steak, burgers, salmon, pork and pasta. Salad is offered for lunches and dinners, but no special vegetarian menu is provided.
Treatment and Staff
The program at Spearhead Lodge is 90 days and incorporates a strict regimen of clinical care, service work, self care, Big Book study, sponsorship and step work. Detox is not offered on-site, but referrals can be provided. A minimum of 15 hours of clinical care takes place each week. Those requiring high-level dual diagnosis support and frequent medication monitoring are also provided with outside referrals.
Treatment includes individual and group therapy with a wide variety of evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. Groups cover a range of topics including 12-step education, relapse prevention, mindfulness, anger management and domestic violence. Life skills training includes topics like financial accountability, goal-setting and relationships. Residents are transported to outside 12-step meetings at least three nights a week.
The staff includes case managers, licensed addiction counselors, a licensed EMDR therapist, a medical doctor and a nutritionist as regular consultants to the program.
Extras
Daily physical fitness is part of the Spearhead routine. There is an on-site fitness center where residents can learn to use fitness equipment or resume previous levels of training.
Aftercare is offered by way of outpatient referrals to BRC Recovery.
