Southwest Wellness Centers

The Basics

With a number of facilities throughout the southwestern United States, Southwest Wellness Centers is a broad organization providing short-term, inpatient detox programs to clients struggling with substance abuse issues. The organization has facilities in Scottsdale, Arizona; Long Beach, California; San Antonio, Texas; Santa Fe, New Mexico and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In addition to its stabilization services, participants also receive basic therapy and treatment as well.

Accommodations and Food

Though each of the facilities may differ, all the above include between eight to 12 residents at a given time housed in semi-private rooms. The facilities are set up to be as comfortable as possible, with full beds, dressers and basic decorations in each room. In addition to the bedrooms, all the facilities also have common areas with cable TV and internet, therapy rooms, shared spaces, dining areas and fully-equipped kitchens. Throughout their stay, all clients are served three meals a day plus snacks from a staff of on-site cooks.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning therapy, all clients go through an intake and assessment process so that the staff can determine their needs. Once stabilized, they begin attending regular individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. Medication management and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) are also available throughout the program.

Groups focus on issues related to addiction including trigger identification, relapse prevention and emotional processing. In addition to that, however, they also cover many life skills related to discharge such as financial planning, resume building and extended care planning. All stays are short-term, typically between one to two weeks. During that time, all participants are also guided into local 12-step programs. As treatment is mostly dedicated to detox and arranging follow-up care, dual diagnosis support is not included.

The staff at Southwest Wellness Centers consists of nurses, LCSWs, LMHCs, case managers and additional Master’s-level counselors.

As mentioned, Southwest Wellness Centers offers programs all over the country, each with flexible lengths of stay and individualized care planning. When participants complete the above program, staff members can also help them arrange for stepped down aftercare and placement in local sober living homes when necessary.

In Summary

In all, Southwest Wellness Centers provides basic, short-term detox programs for clients in need. The detox portion of the program includes medical supervision and MAT while therapy includes evidence-based care, 12-step support and wraparound services whenever necessary. While those in need of more intensive psychiatric or dual diagnosis support may want to find additional help as well, Southwest Wellness Centers remains a resource worth considering for those in the area.
