Southwest Nu-Stop Recovery and Educational Center is an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment facility with two locations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After acquiring the treatment program Sobriety Through Out-Patient (STOP), Dr. Lloyd Thomas Reid revamped the curriculum and renamed it Nu-Stop in 1999. Reid, who is in recovery, has strived to create a client-centered and lifelong sobriety experience through Nu-Stop, which has helped more than 35,000 clients to date.

Treatment and Staff

After clients undergo an intake and bio-psycho-social evaluation, they work with staff members to develop an individualized treatment plan for each person. Care follows either a standard outpatient program, which meets one to three times a week for three-hour sessions, or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that meets three to five times a week. Regular 12-step meeting attendance is also required.

Treatment consists of group and individual therapy using psychoeducation and evidence-based practices such as CBT. Group sessions cover topics including life skills, anger management, financial planning, nutrition, parenting skills and HIV/AIDS education. As clients progress through treatment, relapse prevention and discharge planning are addressed. Clients suffering from co-occurring disorders can receive medication management and psychiatric screenings as necessary. Staff consists of Master’s-level CADCs.

Extras

Additional services include case management, DUI and anger management classes for court-ordered clients, Spanish-speaking therapy sessions and English for Speaker of Other Language (ESOL) classes. Family and couples counseling is also offered, as is faith-based counseling. Other non-addiction related services include GED and job development courses.

In 2014, Nu-Stop Recovery and Educational Center opened the Healing House program, which consists of four living facilities with 24-hour supervision and a total of 200 beds for men and women. While not an intensive program, Healing House is designed to help socially-marginalized clients learn independent living skills and get back on their feet.

In Summary

Overall, Southwest Nu-Stop Recovery and Educational Center is a community-oriented program with flexible treatment plans and substantial ancillary services. Treatment uses evidence-based practices, 12-step involvement and educational groups, with additional support for co-occurring disorders, making Southwest Nu-Stop Recovery and Educational Center a solid choice for recovery for those in the area.
