Southwest Behavioral Health Center OutpatientThe Basics

Southwest Behavioral Health Center provides outpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment throughout five counties in Utah; including Beaver, Kane, Iron, Garfield and Washington. It collaborates with Utah Medicaid to provide free or low cost programming to financially challenged adults. Besides substance abuse treatment, it offers mental health services for adults, adolescents and children as well as dual diagnosis support for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admittance, clients undergo a comprehensive clinical evaluation with an intake counselor. During the assessment, clients receive individualized treatment plans. Clients requiring detox are referred to a local Southwest Behavioral Health Center facility, which offers a social detox method. This model does not incorporate Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT).

Treatment length depends on the client’s needs. Evidence-based practices such as CBT and DBT are employed. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is comprised of three weekly group sessions and individual therapy (scheduled per client’s needs). Group topics include relapse prevention, coping, trauma, anger management, communication skills, self-esteem, stress management, life skills and substance abuse education. While groups range in size, there are no more than 12 clients per session. Programming does not include 12-step.

Dual diagnosis support is provided for clients with co-occurring disorders. Besides therapy, clients requiring medication are referred to a psychiatrist for an evaluation, followed by medication management.

The staff includes clinical psychologists, a psychiatrist, licensed addiction counselors and administrative support.

Extras

Other services include DUI offender education classes, IV drug user information and treatment and court-approved assessments.

Aftercare includes additional outpatient treatment that parallels the IOP track but with less of a time commitment.

Besides outpatient tracks, Southwest Behavioral Health Center offers Horizon House, which has gender-specific residential treatment and Desert Haven, a rehab for women and women with children.

In Summary

Since Utah Medicaid typically covers the cost of treatment, most clients are able to attend in Southwest Behavioral Health Center’s IOP at little to no cost. With evidence-based approaches and a well-rounded staff, this program could work well in conjunction with a 12-step program but is also a solid offering in itself.
