The Basics

Located about seven miles south of Portland, Maine in the small, coastal town of Scarborough, Southern Maine TMS is an outpatient treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with depression and anxiety. Founded in 2011 by Dr. David Jones, board-certified psychiatrist, Southern Maine facilitates Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), an innovative, non-invasive therapeutic method that stimulates the mood centers of the brain. While TMS is the specialty, the facility also offers psychotherapy and medication management as well as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) when necessary.

Treatment and Staff

Southern Maine provides clients with personalized care. Before beginning treatment, individuals undergo an initial consultation to determine the best course of action. Many clients come to Southern Maine after many failed attempts to heal elsewhere. Dr. Jones reviews treatment history as well as the client’s symptoms, and then discusses care options one by one. While most TMS sessions last around 40 minutes, the client’s first appointment generally lasts an hour and a half. TMS pulse strength is tailored to the person, and great care is taken to determine what amount is most effective for each client. While the length of treatment varies depending on the specific needs of the individual, clients typically engage in five 40-minute TMS sessions a week for approximately six weeks.

The Southern Maine TMS team is comprised of Dr. David Jones, DO, a board-certified psychiatrist, and Claudia Jones, a TMS treatment coordinator. Jones also practices at several other facilities including the Southern Maine Medical Center and Broadleaf Behavioral Health. Medication management is available.

Extras

Southern Maine is a certified provider for veterans, and are often referred to by the VA.

In Summary

Southern Maine TMS offers psychotherapy, medication management, ECT and cutting edge TMS treatment programming on an outpatient level for clients coping with depression and anxiety. In addition, there are no side effects from the procedure and the FDA has recently approved TMS for clients without depression. Southern Maine boasts a cutting edge therapeutic technology that has been found to be very effective. For clients seeking something new, Southern Maine TMS is worth looking into.
