Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center Review
Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center was founded in 1968 to provide comprehensive behavioral health treatment to residents of south central West Virginia. Its locations in Mercer, McDowell and Wyoming counties offer counseling and intensive day treatment for mental health disorders. Southern Highlands offers outpatient substance abuse treatment in Mullens, in Wyoming county, and detox and residential treatment for men in Princeton, a small town just north of the Virginia border.
Accommodations and Food
Men are housed in a brick treatment facility that’s a short walk from Princeton Youth Park. Detox and crisis stabilization take place at a nearby facility, and men are transported to the 12th Street facility once they’ve completed detox, which usually lasts three to five days.
Residents have private rooms, and the facility only treats up to 10 men at a time. There is a TV lounge and limited exercise equipment for recreation. While clients cannot have phones or electronics while in treatment, they can earn privileges to use the office phones to call home. There are also designated smoking patios throughout the facility. As part of their life skills training, residents prepare their own meals in the facility kitchen, using groceries provided by Southern Highlands.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment plans last 28 days and incorporate evidence-based therapy, health education, life skills training and peer support. Clients can expect daily group therapy, and individual therapy is at least once a week. Treatment groups use CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the Living in Balance and Stop the Chaos curricula to help develop coping skills and process trauma. Clients also have education groups on health topics such as the disease model of addiction and HIV prevention.
In the afternoons, residents partake in life skills and job training education such as resume writing and interview skills. Clients in need of dual diagnosis support may also have appointments with Southern Highlands’ psychiatrists and nurse practitioners for medication management for mental health diagnoses.
In the evenings, residents have time for recovery homework and are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings. Southern Highlands provides transportation to NA/AA meetings in the community and hosts one on-site each week.
In addition to the aforementioned psychiatrists and nurse practitioners, the treatment team includes MSWs, LPCs and AADC addiction counselors.
Extras
Throughout treatment, clients work with recovery coaches to learn how to set and achieve recovery goals. Southern Highlands also assigns clients case managers to help create aftercare plans and find secure housing. Many of Southern Highlands’ residential clients continue treatment in its Wyoming county outpatient location in Mullens.
