The Basics
Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center was founded in 1968 to provide comprehensive behavioral health treatment to residents of south central West Virginia. Its locations in Mercer, McDowell and Wyoming counties offer counseling and intensive day treatment for mental health disorders. Southern Highlands facilitates detox and residential treatment for men in Princeton, a small town just north of the Virginia border, and outpatient substance abuse treatment in Mullens, a small city in nearby Wyoming county.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment is offered at the standard outpatient level of care, with most clients attending group therapy once or twice a week and individual therapy as needed. The treatment team includes MSWs, LPCs and AADC addiction counselors who utilize trauma-informed care, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients develop coping skills, handle triggers and create healthy relationship boundaries.
Clients in need of dual diagnosis support may see Southern Highlands’ mental health therapists, psychiatrists and nurse practitioners for therapy and medication management. Southern Highlands has been providing extensive mental health services in the area for decades, and clients whose mental health conditions warrant a higher level of care may also enroll in its day treatment programs.
The treatment team encourages clients to attend weekly 12-step meetings in the community throughout their treatment. Most clients attend the outpatient program for at least six months, and may reduce their therapy frequency as they make progress in their recovery.
Extras
Throughout treatment, clients are encouraged to bring loved ones to individual therapy for family counseling. Southern Highlands also employs case managers who help clients access additional supportive services such as medical care and food assistance as well as secure housing. For aftercare planning, clients’ counselors may help them locate ongoing individual therapy and local peer support meetings.
