Southern California Hospital at Van Nuys Review

Located in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, the Southern California Hospital at Van Nuys is an expansive behavioral health hospital that provides a full continuum of treatment for clients struggling with mental illness and co-occurring disorders. While the Van Nuys facility has been around for more than 20 years, it has only become affiliated with the Southern California Hospital group as recently as 2013. In addition to its Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), the facility also offers acute inpatient care.

Accommodations and Food

All told, the facility has a total of 57 beds available for clients between both shared and private rooms. In fitting with the medical ambiance, each of the rooms is fairly clinical with homey touches added, all with twin beds and storage space. In addition to the rooms, the facility also has on-site therapy rooms, common areas, cable TV and a full-service cafeteria. Throughout their stay, residents are served three square meals a day plus snacks.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs. Those in need of detox can do so on-site, often in conjunction with acute inpatient care. Because the inpatient program is an acute one, stays tend to be shorter (though this may vary on a case-by-case basis). Typically, clients are discharged within 30 days whereupon they can continue with outpatient care if they choose.

Throughout their stay, residents attend both group and individual therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT, though specific modalities may vary by case and practitioner. Though the program is more tailored towards severe mental illness than addiction, dual diagnosis support is still available along with medication management whenever necessary. Other parts of treatment include case management, diet and exercise counseling and psychosocial skills workshops. While 12-step participation is not always required, it is encouraged when applicable.

The staff at Southern California Hospital at Van Nuys consists of psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, psychologists, physicians assistants, LMFTs, LCSWs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

Extras

Other care options include suicide prevention workshops, tobacco cessation classes and flexible aftercare planning. Support for Spanish-speaking clients is available as are services for the deaf and hard of hearing. In addition to its Van Nuys location, Southern California Hospitals also has convenient locations in Hollywood and Culver City.

In Summary

In all, the Southern California Hospital at Van Nuys provides a stable and medically-supervised inpatient environment for clients struggling with mental illness and co-occurring disorders. Treatment is individualized and evidence-based, all with psychiatric and medical oversight as well. While the cost of treatment may vary by insurance and length of stay, the Southern California Hospital at Van Nuys’ inpatient option remains a strong resource.
