Southern California Drug and Alcohol Programs, Inc. Heritage House NorthSouthern California Drug and Alcohol Programs, Inc. Heritage House North Review

Located in the southern California city of Anaheim, Heritage House North is a long-term residential treatment program for non-parenting women and mothers and their children. Heritage House North is operated by the non-profit organization Southern California Drug and Alcohol Programs, Inc. (SCDAP), which was created in the 1970s to provide substance abuse treatment to under-served populations. Its programs include residential treatment homes, transitional care and outpatient programs, including one that offers treatment in American Sign Language.

Heritage House North has been serving the women and children of Southern California for over 15 years. The residence houses women and their children for two to three months, and provides parenting skills training and vocational and educational counseling as well as substance abuse treatment. Its nearby sister facility, Heritage House South, focuses on treating pregnant women.

Accommodations and Food

Heritage House North is located in a quiet residential area of Anaheim, near the Sycamore Plaza. Mothers can bring up to three children under the age of 12 into treatment and they all reside in one of the home’s bedrooms. Women without children have a roommate.

Heritage House North features a free on-site daycare center. A kitchen staff prepares all meals and snacks, and the residence has free laundry machines and a common area with a TV and exercise DVDs for recreation. Clients cannot bring personal computers into treatment, but after a 30-day stabilization period they can use cell phones.

Treatment and Staff

Clients attend group therapy and psychoeducation classes from 8:30am until 4:30 pm each day. They also have individual therapy at least once a week and attend at least three 12-step meetings each week, on-site.

Treatment groups address anger management, relapse prevention and co-occurring disorders using the Matrix Model and the Seeking Safety curriculum. Groups are led by CADCs and an MFT comes to the residence each week to provide therapy for dual diagnosis support. If need be, clients are to a nearby mental health clinic for therapy and medication management for mental health diagnoses.

As they progress in their treatment plans, women receive case management services to help them access educational and job training resources.

Family stabilization and reunification is central to treatment at Heritage House North. School-aged children attend the local public elementary school while their mothers are in treatment, and younger children are looked after on-site. All clients participate in parenting skills classes; those who are not parents are expected to attend in order to be better care-takers or eventual parents. The counseling staff works with each client to help her create a reunification plan if she has separated from her children.

Extras

After their 30-day stabilization period, clients can earn privileges to visit family and go for walks and other excursions in the area. Families can also visit the facility with the approval of the client’s primary counselor.

As women near the end of their treatment plans, the counseling staff helps them locate transitional housing, sober living or emergency shelter and create aftercare plans that may include outpatient treatment and peer support meetings.

In Summary

Southern California Alcohol and Drug Programs, Inc.’s Heritage House North has helped thousands of Southern California families flourish through its long-term residential treatment for women and children. Clients graduate from the program with improved parenting skills, a deeper understanding of their addiction, guidance on work and educational opportunities and detailed aftercare plans.
