The Basics
Potosi Outpatient is a member of the Southeast Missouri Behavioral Health (SMBH) network, a community-based provider of behavioral and mental health care services, including substance abuse. Dedicated to the individualized treatment of its clients and their families for over 30 years now, Potosi Outpatient has become a leader in chemical dependency outreach and education throughout the Southeastern Missouri region.
Believing that no two substance-dependent clients are cut from the same fabric, Potosi Outpatient’s priority is to make its services available to those from any background, education level, race or socio-economic class. The primary goal of SMBH’s treatment programs is to provide a supportive environment that helps clients develop self-awareness, manage responsibilities, nurture relationships and set goals—all of which aids them in creating a life of dignity and self respect. Treatment is faith-based, meaning some of the spiritual principles of the 12 steps and exploration of religion and faith is encouraged.
Treatment and Staff
Named after the town in which it’s located, Potosi Outpatient staff develop an individualized outpatient treatment plan for each client. After psychosocial assessments and mental health evaluation interviews, clients are offered a number of treatments including group education, DBT, individual, group and family therapy, EMDR, CBT and Medically-Assisted Treatments (MAT) using Suboxone and Vivtrol. There are no 12-step meetings hosted on-site, but clients are referred out to meetings in the community.
Depending on the needs of the individuals involved, group therapy addresses such topics as sexual abuse, domestic violence, grief, behavioral issues, family relationships, divorce and remarriage, step families and mental health. Dual diagnosis support is offered at Potosi but detox is not.
Potosi Outpatient’s staff are highly qualified, professionally-trained, accredited counselors and social workers, including LCSWs. There are also physicians and psychologists on site.
Extras
Potosi Outpatient offers a range of educational groups in addition to therapy. Depending on the needs of the clients, topics include parenting skills, anger and stress management, communication skills, self care, assertiveness training, co-dependency, substance abuse and relapse prevention.
A family therapy program provides treatment services tailored to both the individual client and their family members. These include mental health education, education in family issues, stress, depression, anxiety and adolescent behavioral disorders.

Approaching the treatment of addiction as a progressive but treatable illness as well as a family disease makes the approach a comprehensive and healing option.
